PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 22 San Diego women's tennis program (14-5, 4-0 WCC) recovered from an early deficit and retirement to defeat Portland (10-10, 3-4 WCC) 4-3 on Sunday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Looking to remain perfect in WCC play, San Diego faced early adversity in their Pacific Northwest road swing.
- Despite a 6-0 win for Kailey Evans and Mia Mack, Portland took the doubles point to jump ahead 1-0.
- Early in singles, Claudia De Las Heras was forced to retire, which put San Diego in a 2-0 hole.
- However, the Toreros rallied in singles play, beginning with Mack's 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
- While Portland would go ahead 3-1, the Toreros depth shined, as Evans was next to clinch her match and cut the deficit back to one.
- With the final two matches coming down to No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Abigail Desiatnikov and Filippa Bruu-Syversen stepped up.
- Both earned 6-3, 6-2 wins to complete a key comeback victory.
NEXT UP
- The Toreros will head home for their home finale on Wednesday, Apr. 17, as they host San Francisco at 11 a.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
