Toreros Beat Waves to Take Series in Malibu

Reddemann starts strong on mound, Costello comes up clutch in 4-2 win at Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. — A strong start on the mound from true freshman Logan Reddemann backed up by a collective effort from the Torero bullpen lifted San Diego baseball (25-12, 10-4 WCC) to a series-clinching win at Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon, earning the Toreros their 14th victory in their last 16 games as they took down the Waves (12-27, 6-8 WCC) by a 4-2 margin at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Pepperdine struck first in the opening frame, scored only once more on after Reddemann settled in and tossed five innings, allowing Jack Costello and Jakob Christian to lead the way for the San Diego offense, which scored three runs in the fourth inning and one run in the sixth. 

Drake Frize and Conner Thurman teamed up to pitch three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to seal the win for the Toreros.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pepperdine got on the board first with an RBI single to left field in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. 
  • San Diego responded in the top of the fourth with an RBI double that was ripped down the left field line by Costello to plate Christian and Jack Gurevitch, who had reached on a single and a walk, respectively. 
  • Later in the inning, Justin DeCriscio extended his team's lead to two with an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1 in favor of the Toreros.
  • Austin Smith knocked an RBI single into right field in the sixth inning which scored Gurevitch and extended USD's lead to 4-1.
  • The Waves cut the Torero lead back to two in the sixth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 4-2, but got no closer.  
ON THE MOUND
  • Reddemann got the start on the mound for USD and turned in five strong innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out three and walking none. 
  • He then made way for Ivran Romero who entered in the sixth inning and surrendered one run on two hits while striking out a pair. 
  • Frize was next out of the Torero bullpen and pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, while notching two strikeouts of his own.
  • He then handed things over to Thurman who, completed the save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.  
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Reddemann picked up his fourth win of 2024 on Saturday afternoon, moving his record to 4-3 in his first college season. 
  • Christian was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Gurevitch had an all-around performance from the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double that was just short of being a home run and a pair of walks.
  • The San Diego pitching staff did not walk a batter on Saturday, marking the second game this season in which the Toreros did not issue a free pass.
  • Every pitcher who took the mound for USD recorded at least two strikeouts. 
  • Thurman earned his second save of 2024 in Saturday afternoon's victory. 
  • San Diego baseball earned its 25th win of 2024 on Saturday, exceeding its win total from the 2023 season (24), with 13 regular season games remaining.
