Reddemann Pitches Toreros to Eighth Straight Win

Freshman righty throws seven strong innings as San Diego catches fire late to secure series victory over LMU

SAN DIEGO — Seven strong innings from freshman right-hander Logan Reddemann and a handful of well-timed hits from the Torero offense helped San Diego baseball (19-10, 6-2 WCC) earn its eighth consecutive victory on Saturday evening, a 6-1 decision against Loyola Marymount (12-19, 1-7 WCC) at Fowler Park that earned USD a series victory over the Lions.

LMU struck first in the opening frame, but did not score again after Reddemann settled in to match his longest start of the season, paving the way for the San Diego bats to tie the game in the sixth, score three times in the seventh, and add another two runs in the eighth before Ivran Romero completed a six-out save.

Impact performances at the plate from Dustin Allen, Jack Gurevitch, and Jakob Christian paced the Torero offense, with the trio combining for six hits, four runs scored, and three of San Diego's four RBIs on Saturday.

IT'S NOT HOW YOU START, IT'S HOW YOU FINISH
  • LMU got on the board first with an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0 after the first inning of play.
  • The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth inning, when a walk from Gurevitch and a double from Austin Smith put runners on second and third for USD before a wild pitch allowed Gurevitch to dash home and tie the game up at one run apiece.
  • San Diego took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Gurevitch ripped an RBI single through the left side to score Allen and advance Justin DeCriscio to third base, who then found home plate on an error by the LMU third baseman.
  • Christian continued the seventh-inning rally for the Toreros by looping an RBI single into center field to plate Gurevitch and give his team a 4-1 advantage.
  • San Diego picked up where it left off in the bottom of the eighth inning, adding two more runs with an RBI triple off the right-center wall from Allen and an RBI groundout from DeCriscio, giving USD a 6-1 lead it would not relinquish.
TRUE FRESHMAN DEALS ON THE MOUND
  • Reddemann (3-2) got the start on the mound for USD on Saturday evening and surrendered one run in the first inning before finishing his night with six scoreless frames, striking out five and walking none.
  • Romero then entered out of the bullpen to start the eighth inning, and completed a six-out save through the final two innings to secure the win for USD.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Reddemann — the reigning WCC Freshman of the Week — picked up his third win of 2024 after turning in his second consecutive seven-inning performance in a row.
  • Across his last two starts he has totaled 14 innings, and has allowed just one run on ten hits while striking out 15 and walking only one.
  • Christian's 2-for-4 mark on Saturday moved his hit streak to eight consecutive games, and earned him his sixth consecutive multi-hit game.
  • Romero's six-out save was his second of 2024.
  • Gurevitch's seventh and eighth-inning singles extended his hit streak to nine games.
  • Allen's eighth inning RBI triple is his first triple of the season, and the fifth of his college career.
  • Each of the 11 total hits LMU has notched through the first two games of the series has been a single. The Lions will enter Sunday's finale without an extra-base hit in the series.
  • San Diego has now won eight games in a row and has prevailed in 12 of its last 15 contests.
