Baseball Sweeps Loyola Marymount to Secure Ninth Straight Win

Bolstered by two home runs from Jakob Christian, Toreros beat Lions 15-12 on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — Seven Toreros put together multi-hit performances on Sunday afternoon as San Diego baseball (20-10, 7-2 WCC) beat Loyola Marymount (12-20, 1-8 WCC) by a 15-12 margin at Fowler Park, earning USD its ninth straight victory as it prevailed for the 13th time in its last 16 games to achieve the longest win streak of the Brock Ungricht era.

Led by Jakob Christian's second two-home run effort of 2024, San Diego scored six in the second inning, one in the third, five in the fifth and three in the sixth to build a sizable advantage that withstood multiple LMU rallies.

Alex Schrier highlighted the Toreros' efforts on the mound with two scoreless innings that saw him strike out all six batters he faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LMU got on the board first in the top of the second with a two-RBI single to left center field.
  • Jack Gurevitch and Jakob Christian started off the second inning for USD by blasting a pair of home runs — a solo and a two-run shot, respectively — to give San Diego its first lead of the game at 3-2.
  • Just after Ariel Armas scored on a wild pitch, Justin DeCriscio ripped a bases-clearing two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Will Worthington from third and Angelo Peraza all the way from first base to give USD a 6-2 advantage after a productive second inning.
  • A single through to right field from Worthington in the bottom of the third inning allowed San Diego to add another run, extending its lead to 7-2.
  • LMU recorded an RBI walk, a fielding error, and a two RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to add four runs and cut the USD advantage to just one at 7-6.
  • Just after Worthington notched an RBI fielder's choice, DeCriscio ripped an RBI double into left field to kick off a two-out rally for San Diego in the fifth inning. Gurevitch then added on with a two RBI single to regain his team's lead and make the score 12-6.
  • Christian turned on the fourth pitch he saw in the bottom of the sixth and hammered his team-best eleventh homer of 2024, sending a towering two-run shot just inside of Fowler Park's left field foul pole to make it 14-6 in his team's favor.
  • Dustin Allen followed with an RBI-triple to add another run for the Toreros in the sixth, and when the inning ended USD was up 15-6.
  • An RBI flyout, an RBI sacrifice fly, a two-run home run, a bases-loaded walk, and a two-RBI double allowed LMU to answer with six runs across the game's last three innings to cut the San Diego lead to 15-12, but the Lions got no closer after leaving runners on second and third in the ninth.
ON THE MOUND
  • Lefty Calvin Schapira got the start on the mound for the Toreros on Sunday afternoon, and was solid until the fourth inning, when he surrendered a single and a pair of walks with one out.
  • Conner Thurman was first out of the bullpen in relief of Schapira, and  allowed four runs to score before ultimately finishing out the fourth.
  • Schrier took over for Thurman in the fifth and struck out the side in back-to-back innings to complete a pair of dominant, scoreless frames.
  • Dallin Harrison, and Nick Suspenzi then teamed up on the mound to bridge the gap to the ninth with an inning apiece.
  • Drake Frize entered in relief of Aidan Gonzalez in the ninth inning, and finished the job for the Toreros by earning his first career save.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • San Diego's batting order on Sunday remained the same for a third straight game.
  • Alex Schrier picked up the win in the series finale to move to 2-2.
  • Christian's pair of homers in Sunday's victory marked his sixth and seventh home runs in his last seven games (three at Pacific, one against USC, and three against LMU).
  • He has now homered twice in a single game on two occasions this season (March 28 at Pacific).
  • Christian has now hit safely in nine consecutive games, and has recorded two hits or more in seven straight contests.
  • Gurevitch's second inning homer was his fifth of the season, and extended his hit streak to ten consecutive games.
  • Two of Dustin Allen's six career triples came in this weekend's series with LMU.
  • San Diego's current nine-game win streak is the program's longest since the 2021 season, when the Toreros won nine straight contests from March 4 to March 19, 2021.
UP NEXT
