Toreros Take Down Tritons for Tenth Straight Victory

Strong effort from starter Ryan Kysar leads San Diego to 7-1 win over UC San Diego at Triton Ballpark

LA JOLLA, Calif. — A strong performance on the mound from starter Ryan Kysar backed by a pair of impressive efforts out of the Torero bullpen pushed San Diego baseball (21-10, 7-2 WCC) to its tenth straight victory and its longest win streak in nearly 16 years, as it surged past UC San Diego (21-9, 8-4 Big West) by a 7-1 margin in a midweek non-conference matchup at Triton Ballpark on Tuesday night.

The Toreros struck first in the second inning, but could not claim a lead larger than one until the eighth, when a late-game rally led by RBI singles from Jakob Christian, Will Worthington, and Angelo Peraza gave them a six run advantage, which was enough cushion for Ivran Romero and Tristan LaMaison to finish the job on the mound for USD with a pair of scoreless outings.

USD's current ten game win streak is the Toreros' longest since they recorded a program-record 16 victories in a row from April 4 to April 27, 2008.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A pair of singles from Austin Smith and Ariel Armas in the top of the second inning set up Worthington to send an RBI single through to left field, plating Smith and giving the Toreros an early 1-0 lead.
  • UCSD knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single.
  • Smith continued his hot streak against his former team through to the sixth inning, breaking the deadlock with an RBI double to left-center, scoring Gurevitch to regain his team's one-run advantage.
  • Jack Gurevitch and Jack Costello reached on a single and a fielder's choice to kickstart a two-out eighth inning rally for San Diego, with both eventually being sent home when Christian knocked a two-RBI single into left field.
  • A pair of RBI singles from Worthington and Peraza then extended San Diego's lead to 6-1 after the eighth inning.
  • Gurevitch drove in Dustin Allen with an RBI single up the middle, giving USD a 7-1 advantage in the top of the ninth that it did not relinquish.
ON THE MOUND
  • Kysar got the start on the mound for USD and began the evening by striking out the side in the first inning, and eventually went on to pitch 5.1 total frames, giving up just one earned run while striking out seven and walking only two.
  • Ivran Romero was first out of the bullpen and turned in 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out three and walking none.
  • He then turned it over to Tristan Lamaison, who finished Tuesday evening's game on the mound with a scoreless ninth inning in his season debut.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • After missing the Toreros' first 31 games this season due to injury, Lamaison made his 2024 debut on Tuesday evening.
  • His ninth-inning outing comes 370 days after he turned in a scoreless inning against UC San Diego at Triton Ballpark last season.
  • Gurevitch's 2-for-4 mark on Tuesday evening pushed his batting average to a team-high .404 and extended his hit streak to eleven games.
  • Christian's eighth inning single extended his hit streak to ten games.
  • Worthington's 2-for-3 performance marked his second multi-hit and multi-RBI performance in a row.
  • With Tuesday night's victory, San Diego clinched at least a season series victory with UC San Diego, giving it a 2-0 record with one game remaining (May 7).
  • San Diego has now won 10 games in a row and has prevailed 14 of its last 17 contests.
