USD Baseball Clinches Share of 2024 WCC Regular-Season Title

9-0 win at San Francisco earns Toreros second conference championship since 2022

SAN FRANCISCO — San Diego baseball (36-13, 19-4 WCC) on Saturday afternoon utilized a dominant 9-0 win to secure at least a share of the 2024 West Coast Conference regular-season title for the first time since 2015, beating San Francisco (20-30, 3-17 WCC) at Benedetti Diamond behind a strong start from freshman Logan Reddemann and a well-rounded team effort at the plate.

Reddemann (7-3) completed six shutout frames on the mound for USD before being backed up by stingy performances from Vaughn Mauterer and Chase Minor out of the bullpen.

The Toreros' commanding performance at the plate was highlighted by a 2-for-3 afternoon from Jakob Christian, one that featured a second-inning three-run shot that earned him his 21st homer of the year.

EARLY AND OFTEN
  • Ariel Armas and Jakob Christian connected on a pair of hits in the first inning to get the game started for the Toreros before being brought home by RBI singles from Austin Smith and Jack Costello that give USD an early 2-0 lead.
  • Christian continued his hot streak at the plate by launching a three-run homer over Benedetti Diamond's left -field wall, giving San Diego a 5-0 advantage after the second inning of play courtesy of his 21st longball of 2024.
  • RBI singles from Justin DeCriscio and Dustin Allen followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from Will Worthington added three more runs to make it an 8-0 Torero advantage.
  • The score remained the same until the top of the ninth inning, when an RBI single from Worthington brought home Jack Gurevitch to give San Diego a 9-0 lead.
LOCKDOWN LOGAN
  • Reddemann got the start on the mound on Saturday afternoon and finished with six shutout innings, surrendering six hits while striking out five and walking one.
  • He made way for Mauterer in the top of the seventh inning, who continued the momentum for USD by pitching scoreless seventh and eighth innings while striking out a pair and also walking just one.
  • Minor finished things out on the mound for the Toreros by pitching a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win for San Diego.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Every hitter in the Torero batting order recorded at least one hit on Saturday, and two batters (Christian and Gurevitch) recorded two.
  • Worthington was 2-for-4, and recorded a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
  • Reddemann picked up the win for USD on Saturday afternoon, moving his record in 2024 to 7-3.
  • San Diego has now won 25 of its last 28 contests, with just one regular season game to go in 2024.
  • With Vaughn Mauterer pitching in the bottom of the seventh inning and runners on second and third, the Torero infield turned the program's first triple play since February 26, 2000. Third baseman Will Worthington fielded a hard ground ground ball that was hit directly to him and quickly stepped on third for the force out before firing to second baseman Angelo Peraza at second, who threw a strike to first baseman Jack Gurevitch to complete the 5-4-3 putout. The remarkable inning-ending triple play is just the second in San Diego baseball history (2/26/00 against Utah).
UP NEXT
