No. 18 Men’s Tennis Beats Rain and No. 39 Baylor to Advance at NCAA’s

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 18 San Diego men's tennis program (23-3, 7-1 WCC) navigated around a four-hour rain delay to defeat No. 39 Baylor (18-12, 2-5 Big 12), 4-1 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With inclement weather looming in the College Station area, the Toreros took the court behind a grey and gloomy backdrop with intense focus.
  • Doubles proved to a be a feisty affair, despite a comfortable, 6-1 win for Savriyan Danilov and Lambert Ruland on court three.
  • Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles remained on serve before the match entered a brief rain delay.
  • Returning to the court less than a half an hour later, the Toreros forced two tiebreakers, but it would be Stian Klaassen and Oliver Tarvet who clinched the doubles point first.
  • However, the match entered another rain delay, that lasted around four hours.
  • Once play finally resumed, the Toreros and Bears began action in singles.
  • Klaassen would jump out to an early advantage to power the Toreros to a strong start at the back end of the lineup.
  • Tarvet, Sacchitt Sharrma and Danilov each took their opening sets, but the Bears would have an answer.
  • While Klaassen steamrolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win, the five remaining matches proved to be extremely tight.
  • Baylor picked up a win at No. 2 singles to cut the lead to 2-1, while they rallied for second set wins in Sharrma and Tarvet's matches.
  • However, Danilov fended off some second set break points to pull away, clinching a straight set win to make it 3-1.
  • With the Bears taking leads on court three and six, Tarvet showed composure and rattled off five straight games to secure the 6-2 third set win and the match.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros will face off against 15th seed and No. 17 ranked Texas A&M on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT, at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
