SAN DIEGO — A pair of home runs from
Ariel Armas combined with four electric extra-inning frames on the mound from
Alex Schrier set the scene for
Jack Gurevitch to step up to the plate and deliver a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning, giving San Diego baseball (31-13, 15-4 WCC) a thrilling 6-5 win over Santa Clara (21-21, 8-8 WCC) on Friday night at Fowler Park.
The opening nine innings of play featured four lead changes and two ties, as the Toreros scored once in the first, once in the fourth, and three times in the bottom of the sixth — all courtesy of a three-run shot to left field from Armas — before the Broncos ultimately knotted the game up at 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run that sent Friday night's conference crusade into extra innings.
After failing to find any offensive momentum through the first three frames of extras, Angelo Peraza gave San Diego a spark in the bottom of the thirteenth inning by sending a two-strike single through the right side. DeCriscio immediately followed suit by sending a single of his own into right field, advancing Peraza into scoring position while setting the stage for Gurevitch's late-night heroics. The sophomore first baseman stepped up to the plate and ripped the first pitch he saw into center field to score Peraza from second base and secure an unforgettable walk-off win for the Toreros.
Schrier kept USD alive through extra innings by turning in perhaps the best performance of his San Diego career, pitching four scoreless frames in the top of the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth innings, twice stranding multiple runners in scoring position to keep the Broncos off the board to push USD to victory.
THE ARIEL ARMAS SHOW
- Santa Clara got on the board in the first inning with a solo home run, before San Diego responded in its half of the frame with an RBI single up the middle from Austin Smith to tie the game up at one run apiece
- Armas gave the Toreros the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer that was ripped over Fowler Park's left field wall.
- The Broncos took a two-run advantage in the top of the fifth and sixth innings with a pair of RBI triples and an RBI single, making it 4-2.
- Armas responded yet again for USD, this time in the bottom of the sixth by booming his second longball of the game to left field for a three-run homer, regaining his team's one-run advantage.
- The score remained the same until the top of the ninth, when the Broncos tied the game up at five with a two-out solo home run, pushing the game to extra innings.
- After 3.5 nail-biting scoreless innings from both teams, Angelo Peraza and Justin DeCriscio rallied for the Toreros in the bottom of the 13th inning with a pair of singles, which allowed Jack Gurevitch to step up to the plate and secure the win for San Diego with a walk-off single into center field that scored Peraza from second.
SHUTDOWN SCHRIER
- Randall got the start on the mound in Friday night's victory, and turned in 4.1 strong innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out five and walking one.
- Calvin Schapira then took over in the fifth inning and completed 1.2 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts and a walk, before handing things over to Conner Thurman, who pitched a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts for himself.
- Drake Frize entered in the bottom of the eighth inning in relief of Ivran Romero, and secured the last out of the frame before giving up the game-tying run with two outs in the top of the ninth. He was able to limit the damage and keep the game tied at 5-5, which eventually sent San Diego to extra innings.
- Schrier was tasked with pitching the entirety of the Toreros' extra-innings action and turned in his best performance to date as a Torero, throwing four electric shutout frames on the mound while striking out two, and walking just one.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Gurevitch's thirteenth inning walk-off is the second game-winning hit of his young San Diego career, with the first coming last season in the series finale against Portland at Fowler Park (April 16, 2024).
- Schrier picked up his third win of the season after his dynamic extra-innings performance (which marked the longest outing of his San Diego career), moving his record to 3-2 in 2024.
- Armas' pair of homers were his fifth and sixth longballs of the season, and marked the first multi-homer game of his college career. He also recorded four of the Toreros' six total RBIs in Friday night's victory.
- USD's walk-off on Friday night is its first since it defeated UC San Diego in ten innings earlier this season in the 2024 home-opener on February 21st.
- Thirteen total innings is the most USD has played since it walked off LMU in 14 innings two seasons ago on April 14, 2022.
