SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (16-33, 4-5 WCC) fell in their series opener to Saint Mary's (25-20, 5-4 WCC) in a 7-0 decision on Friday evening at the USD Softball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SAINT MARY'S 7, SAN DIEGO 0
- Friday's matchup proved to be a pitching duel for much of the game, as Courtney Rose took the circle for the Toreros.
- Rose tallied three strikeouts in the first inning and kept the game scoreless through the first two frames.
- Saint Mary's was able to strike for a run in the third inning, as they tallied four hits but only two left the infield to make it 1-0.
- The Toreros attempted a response in the fourth inning, as Carly Ruiz tallied an infield single, before Taylor Johnson drew a hit-by-pitch.
- Joecellia Roberts moved the runners into scoring position, but the Toreros could not drive in the runs.
- That proved to be costly, as the Gaels got a run in the top of the fifth inning, behind more small ball.
- Saint Mary's reached on a strikeout then advanced multiple bases on a single and two sacrifice bunts.
- Despite Rose reaching nine strikeouts on the day, the Gaels managed to add more runs and make it 5-0 after six innings.
- After Saint Mary's hit a home run in the seventh inning, a late rally started by an Arisa Tovar walk and Emma Giaime single fell short and gave the visitors the victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Johnson extended her on-base streak to 11 consecutive games in the loss.
- Giaime continues to heat up and is now 4-for-9 (.444) over her last three games.
