SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Home runs from
Jakob Christian and
Jack Gurevitch combined with three electric innings out of the bullpen from
Alex Schrier led San Diego baseball (41-14, 20-4 WCC) to an NCAA Regional win over Fresno State (33-29, 16-14 Mountain West) to keep the Toreros' season alive, beating the Bulldogs by a score of 7-5 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Christian hit his 25th home run of the year and second of the regional in the top of the first inning to get the game started for USD. Overall, he led a strong performance for the San Diego offense that combined for eleven hits, four walks, seven RBIs, three doubles, and two home runs.
After five solid innings from starter Austin Smith and one scoreless inning from Vaughn Mauterer, Alex Schrier stepped up big for the Toreros in the postseason by shutting out Fresno State through the final three innings on the mound in his former collegiate stadium, as he finished his day allowing just two hits, striking out four, and walking none.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USD wasted little time in Saturday afternoon's elimination contest, as Christian blasted his 25th homer of the year over Caesar Uyesaka Stadium's right-center wall in the first inning to give his team an early 2-0 advantage.
- Fresno State got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single to make it 2-1.
- The Toreros regained their two-run advantage in the top of the fourth inning when Gurevitch hit a sacrifice fly into right center to plate Christian from third.
- Just after Will Worthington ripped a double off the left-center wall to put runners on second and third in the top of the fifth inning, Angelo Peraza and Ariel Armas both earned RBI base-hits to score both runners and make it 5-1, San Diego.
- Jack Costello then continued the fifth-inning rally for USD with another RBI double to finish off the three run inning for the Toreros, making it 6-1.
- The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to come within one at 6-5 before Gurevitch added a key insurance run for San Diego in the top of the eighth inning by hammering a towering solo shot to deep right field, regaining the two-run advantage for USD at 7-5.
ON THE MOUND
- Smith got the start on the mound for USD and turned in five innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking none.
- After pitching yesterday, Mauterer entered out of the Torero bullpen again today, and threw a scoreless sixth inning.
- He then passed the baton to Schrier, who threw three electric shutout innings to earn the save and secure the win for San Diego.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Eight different Toreros recorded at least one hit in the win, with three recording a multi-hit performance.
- Smith picked up the win on the mound to maintain his perfect record in 2024 and move to 7-0.
- Schrier earned his first save of 2024 in Saturday afternoon's victory.
