SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's soccer program (0-2, 0-0 WCC) dropped their home opener to Long Beach State (1-1, 0-0 Big West), in a 2-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego and Long Beach got off to a quiet start in the opening 10 minutes, before the Beach began to gain momentum.
- Toreros goalkeeper Ilise Medrano was sharp early on, making a pair of saves and keeping the game level through the first 20 minutes.
- However, Long Beach was finally able to break through with a 21st minute goal from Penny Smith to make it 1-0.
- The San Diego defense recovered and kept the Beach from registering any shots on goal the rest of the half.
- However, Long Beach extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal from Makayla Demelo in the 48th minute.
- The Toreros attempted a late rally and began to exert more pressure, forcing the Beach into two yellow cards in the last five minutes.
- The first yellow card delivered a free kick opportunity for Sara Evans on the edge of the box, but her attempt went wide.
- Long Beach would then make a mistake in the back line that was intercepted by Maquena O'Callaghan, who got the ball to Olivia Jandreski.
- Jandreski nearly cut the deficit in half, as her shot in the 87th minute nearly scraped the crossbar.
- Ultimately, the Beach would finish off a 2-0 win.
