Toreros Bludgeon Bison in Historic 8-1 Win

Hat trick from Cesar Bahena helps San Diego dismantle Lipscomb, total most goals in a game since 2006

SAN DIEGO – The goal party for the University of San Diego men's soccer team continued with a 8-1 home victory over Lipscomb Thursday night.

Junior Cesar Bahena scored a hat trick with goals coming in the 23rd, 32nd and 65th minutes. It marked the first game of Bahena's collegiate career where he scored at least two goals. Bahena attempted six shots on the night with an assist.

USD (2-0-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through 71 minutes before the Bisons (1-1-0) scored on the penalty kick. The Toreros scored eight goals on 10 assists. San Diego attempted 16 shots with nine on goal.

The Toreros had seven different players score at least one goal and record at least one assist. Junior Josh Martinez had a game-high three assists followed by junior Owen Walz with two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a back and forth affair to begin, Toreros freshman midfielder Luca Fava received a yellow card in the 10th minute for unsporting.
  • In the 23rd minute, junior Cesar Bahena stole the ball and dribbled up before blasting the ball into the upper left part of the net from 10 meters.
  • Bahena had another opportunity in the 29th minute in the fastbreak but his shot went left of the post, resulting in a goal kick.
  • The junior redeemed himself three minutes later by weaving around four Lipscomb defenders to find the back of the net from 15 meters out.
  • Senior Ethan Warne tried to get into the goal party with a header off a rebound in the 33rd minute before it was blocked by the Bisons' goalkeeper.
  • With that, USD took a 2-0 lead at halftime over Lipscomb.
  • In the 51st minute Lipscomb had a free kick that went toward the net before sophomore Donovan Parisian saved one of four balls.
  • One minute later, the theme of top bins only continued as Warne found Fava, who punched it into the top half of goal to give San Dego a 3-0 lead.
  • In the 65th minute, Bahena recorded a hat trick in transition on a behind-the-back heel pass from junior Samy Kanaan
  • Three minutes later, the Bisons were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Lipscomb found the back of the net to get on the board and get the score back to a three-goal deficit.
  • Eight minutes after Bahena recorded a hat trick, he found Kanaan for the team's fifth goal of the night from the smallest of angles on the right side in the 73rd minute.
  • The Bisons' Keegan Yorke was assessed his second yellow card for a red card in the 75th minute.
  • In the 86th minute, junior Josh Martinez took a corner and found senior Jack Sandmeyer on a header to extend the Toreros lead to 6-1.
  • Four minutes later, sophomore Jaxson Findlay found the back of the net from Walz.
  • Less than 30 seconds later and before the final horn sounded, USD found the back of the net one more time as sophomore Steven Ramirez scored on assists from Martinez and Findlay.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Junior Simon Duus Muller, who has scored in each of the team's first two matches, was subbed out due to injury in the 21st minute.
  • Bahena has now scored in back-to-back matches. It marked the first time he has found the back of the net in two straight games since Nov. 10 and 16 against Gonzaga and California Baptist, respectively.
  • It also marked the first time of Bahena's collegiate career that he had scored at least two goals in the same match.
  • Bahena's hat trick marked the first hat trick in program history since Miguel Berry scored three times in a 4-3 overtime loss at San Francisco on November 6, 2016.
  • In addition to Bahena's second goal, Owen Walz and Iain Wagner were credited with assists. It marked the first collegiate assist for both Walz and Wagner. Walz later recorded his second assist of the night.
  • Fava scored his second goal in as many matches as Warne recorded his first assist of the season and seventh of his college career.
  • Kanaan, who has recorded at least one assist in two consecutive games, also netted in his first goal of the 2024 campaign.
  • The eight goals are the Toreros' most since scoring 11 in a home win on September 17, 2006 against Rider.
  • Thursday's game was played as part of a doubleheader with USD women's soccer, which tied 0-0 in its preceding matchup with UC Santa Barbara earlier in the evening.
