NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Two goals in the final nine minutes of play, four minutes apart, saw the Torero women's soccer team win it's second straight and wrap up non-conference play with a 2-0 win over Cal-State Northridge Thursday.
"I'm incredibly proud of the team for securing two straight wins, especially with another shutout," first-year head coach
Greg LaPorte said. "It shows the discipline and focus that our players have been bringing on the field."
It's the second straight clean sheet for sophomore goalkeeper
Ilise Medrano and her defense, who haven't allowed a goal in 189 straight minutes. Medrano wasn't really tested as the Toreros kept the Matadors to just four shots on goal.
"The defense has been rock solid and our attacking unit continues to find ways to create chances," said LaPorte. "We're building momentum and it's exciting to see the growth from game-to-game."
After a tame first half, the first big chances came for the Toreros with consecutive saves forced in the 52
nd minute. Minutes later sophomore
Tamia Graham, back into the starting lineup, ripped a shot off the cross bar.
The Toreros continued to knock on the door as sophomore
Olivia Jandreski's goal was ruled offside, a play also set up by a brilliant run from freshman
Ella Callanan.
San Diego finally broke the deadlock in the 81
st minute as sophomore
Mikayla Abrenica tucked one away in the bottom left corner from outside the 18-yard box.
Four minutes later, from a nearly identical position, senior midfielder
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa tucked one past the keeper's near post to double the lead in the 84
th minute.
The Toreros move to 2-4-3 on the season and roll into West Coast Conference play riding a two-game hot streak. They'll host the university of San Francisco Dons on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Torero Stadium at 7 p.m..
