BATON ROUGE — Senior setter Jane Petrie greeted her mother with a hug ahead of Friday afternoon's match between Boston College and San Diego, their embrace taking place just before first serve on the purple and gold court at the Pete Maravich Center.
And during the early stages of the opening set, it appeared that the Eagles might greet head coach
Jennifer Petrie and the Toreros with a defeat, with the eldest Petrie daughter notching eight assists as her BC team worked its way to a 21-17 lead.
Clutch kills down the stretch from USD's
Ella Durham,
Kristen Erland, and
Kennedy Osunsanmi, however, helped San Diego (4-5, 0-0 WCC) seize control with a last-minute surge, pushing it to a come-from-behind win in the first frame that was all it needed to cruise to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of Boston College (7-5, 0-0 ACC) and prevail in straight sets for a second consecutive match.
Onsunsanmi, a freshman from Stevenson Ranch, California, racked up a team-high 13 kills in the victory, marking the seventh time in her first nine college matches that she has reached double digits in that category. First-year setter
Kylie Munday continued to shine as she directed the Torero offense, racking up 37 assists to notch her seventh consecutive match with 30 or more.
San Diego was tied 4-4 with the Eagles as the second set got started before senior middle blocker
Haylee Stoner (San Marcos High School) put USD back in front by hammering a key kill and teaming up on a combo block with Munday. The Toreros didn't trail again, and led for the majority of set two and all of set three.
Stoner struck again with a kill to make it an eight-point USD advantage as San Diego marched toward the sweep in the third and final set, but it was Durham who stole the show to punctuate the Toreros' fourth victory of 2024. She ripped off two kills and a solo block to account for three of her team's final four points, hitting .308 on the afternoon as she finished a kill shy of her career high (10) that was set earlier this season against SMU.
NOTABLE:
- Libero Madi Allen paced the match with 19 digs and added seven assists.
- Osunsanmi, Stoner, and Erland were all tied for the team lead with three block assists apiece.
