Four-Game Win Streak Snapped at Washington State

Toreros drop tough 3-1 decision to Cougars on Saturday afternoon in Pullman

PULLMAN, WA — San Diego volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision at Washington State on Saturday afternoon, snapping a four-match, 12-set Torero win streak as they faced the Cougars for the first time as a member of the West Coast Conference.

WSU (7-4, 2-0 WCC) won the first set 25-22 before USD (6-6, 1-1 WCC) cruised to a 25-15 victory in the second. The Cougars responded by taking the final two frames by scores of 25-23 and 25-20.

The loss put a sour end to what had otherwise been a highly successful five-game road stint for the Toreros. San Diego swept all three matches at a multi-team event hosted by LSU last weekend and began conference play on Thursday night with another dominant sweep at Gonzaga. Before falling in its opening frame at Bohler Gym, USD had not lost a set since September 14, when it was defeated by No. 12 Oregon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

San Diego was within a point down the stretch in set one, 21-20, but could not hang on to make it 13 victorious sets in a row. After evening the match at 1-1 USD appeared to be back on track when it led 22-20 late in the third, but Washington State closed the frame on a 6-1 run to pull back in front. It was more of the same in the fourth, with Washington State embarking on a late 10-5 run to deal the Toreros a 3-1 loss in the match despite the visitors erasing an early 6-1 deficit to take a short-lived 16-15 lead.

Isabel Clark and Nemo Beach headlined the Toreros' efforts on Saturday afternoon, notching 11 kills apiece while hitting .119 and .385, respectively. Haylee Stoner continued her midseason surge, totaling eight kills at a strong .462 clip alongside four digs, three blocks (one solo), two service aces, and two assists. Madi Allen added another 13 digs to go with three assists and a pair of service aces.

The Toreros are back in action on Thursday night, when they continue WCC play by returning home to the JCP to host Pacific. First serve in the match against the Tigers, which will be played as part of USD's annual Alumni Weekend, is set for 7:00 p.m.
