RIVERSIDE – The San Diego women's soccer program (0-3-3, 0-0-0 WCC) came away with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against California Baptist (3-3-1, 0-0-0 WAC) on Thursday night at CBU Soccer Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first 10 minutes of play featured a shot by each team as both Maquena O'Callaghan and CBU's Morgan Witz delivered shots that missed the cage.
- San Diego's offense didn't stop early in the first half as they registered their second shot on goal courtesy of Olivia Jandreski that was collected by the Lancers' goalkeeper.
- A California Baptist foul on Ava Westlund led to a free kick from Ella Callanan at the 20-minute mark helped create a chance for the Toreros but ended up being a Lancers' goal kick.
- It wouldn't take much longer for San Diego to break the scoreless tie as Maquena O'Callaghan used some fancy footwork to beat the keeper and put the Toreros ahead at the 25-minte mark of the match.
- Both sides worked hard to try and generate scoring chances the remainder of the first half, as San Diego held the 1-0 lead at the break.
- The Toreros' defense came through with some key stops early in the second half as they forced a pair of off-target shots from CBU's Nikki Mau following a California Baptist corner kick.
- After Sara Evans' shot was collected by California Baptist's keeper, the Lancers offense got to work and scored their first goal of the night courtesy of Lauryn White in the 61st minute of play on Thursday.
- CBU kept working late in the half to try and break the tie, but the Toreros' defense held strong and continued to limit scoring chances for the Lancers.
- San Diego keeper Ilise Medrano came through in the clutch with a key save off a Kaylee Hauck shot in the 86th minute as the match ended in a 1-1 draw in Riverside.
