SAN DIEGO — Freshman opposite
Kennedy Osunsanmi led the way for the Toreros with a career-high 18 kills as her team claimed an early two-set lead over St. John's in its 2024 home opener, but San Diego volleyball (0-3, 0-0 WCC) could not hang on as the Red Storm (4-0, 0-0 Big East) recovered to win three straight sets and steal a 3-2 victory at the Jenny Craig Pavilion as part of the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic.
USD won the first two frames by 25-22 and 25-21 margins before dropping three consecutive decisions (27-25, 25-22, and 15-8) to fall in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - San Diego, 25-22
- San Diego fell to an early 8-5 deficit before a pair of blocks from Nemo Beach and Kristen Erland combined with a four-point service run from Kylie Munday allowed the Toreros to tie the set at 10 apiece.
- The Red Storm tied the set again at 16-16 before multiple kills from Nemo Beach and Haylee Stoner gave USD a lead it would not relinquish.
- San Diego out-blocked St. John's by an 8-2 margin and outscored 21-18 in the opening frame.
Second Set - San Diego, 25-21
- A trio of service aces from Munday, Olivia Bennett, and Madi Allen gave the Toreros an early 7-5 lead to start the second set of play.
- After the Red Storm took a 11-10 lead, a strong kill from Munday tied the set again at 11-11.
- A three-point service run from Allen combined with kills from Osunsanmi and Beach allowed USD to maintain its lead through the remainder of the set.
- The Toreros outhit St. John's .188 to .034 in the second set.
Third Set - St. John's, 27-25
- The Red Storm raced to an early 11-3 lead over the Toreros.
- A six-point service run from Munday allowed San Diego to chase back late in the third set and tie it at 22 points apiece, before St. John's scraped by to claim a wild 27-25 set victory.
Fourth Set - St. John's, 25-22
- A dominant set from the Red Storm that saw the Toreros lead only once (2-1) ended 25-22 in favor of St. John's.
Fifth Set - St. John's, 15-8
- After a kill from Osunsanmi gave the Toreros an early 1-0 lead, St. John's retook the lead at 2-1 and did not look back, winning by a 15-8 margin to claim a 3-2 set victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Osunsanmi led the way again for the Toreros with 18 kills and a .308 hitting percentage, setting a new career high with 18 kills.
- Munday dominated the assist line with 36 total assists, shattering her career high of 21 which was set against SMU on August 31st.
- Clark also earned a new career high with 14 kills.
- As a team, the Toreros earned a season-high 31 blocks against the Red Storm, matching its total from the last two matches combined.
- Stoner recorded six kills while hitting .211
