Toreros Hit the Road to Face LMU and Santa Clara

LOS ANGELES/SANTA CLARA – Getting back on the road for another week of conference play, the San Diego women's basketball team (4-10, 0-5 WCC) is traveling up the coast for a Thursday night matchup with the LMU Lions (6-7, 0-5 WCC) on January 9 at 6:00 p.m.

The Toreros will then head back to the Bay Area for a Saturday afternoon tip-off with the Santa Clara Broncos (8-8, 2-4 WCC) on January 11 beginning at noon from the Leavey Center. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • USD enters this week still seeking their first win of West Coast Conference play after dropping a close game against Pacific by a 72-66 final score from Jenny Craig Pavilion.
  • Truitt Reilly had a tremendous afternoon against the Tigers as she scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while making 7-of-8 free throw attempts in her last game.
  • Also reaching double figures in scoring against Pacific were Ava Ranson and Kylie Horstmeyer as they each had 10 points and combined for three steals on Saturday at home. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. LMU

  • Thursday evening's game in LA will be the 87th all-time meeting for the long time conference opponents as the Toreros lead the all-time series 54-32 and won the most recent meeting between the schools.
  • In last season's matchups the home team won both games as LMU earned the 67-60 victory on Jan. 20, 2024, while the Toreros responded at Jenny Craig Pavilion with a 66-50 victory on Feb. 17, 2024 to split the 2023-24 season series. 
  • Dylan Horton was a key player for San Diego in last season's games against the Lions as she averaged 15 points across both games to go along with 3.5 assists. 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SANTA CLARA

  • Saturday afternoon's game in the South Bay will be the 87th all-time meeting as San Diego holds the slight all-time advantage at 44-42 despite dropping both games last year. 
  • The Broncos first defeated the Toreros at home by a 83-57 margin on Feb. 8, 2024, and then earned a road victory late in the season by a 66-57 final score on Feb. 22, 2024. 
  • Horstmeyer last season scored 12 points in both games against Santa Clara as she will be making another trip back home to the Bay Area.

SCOUTING THE LIONS

  • LMU enters this week of conference play with a 6-7 overall record but have dropped their first five conference games against Portland twice, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Oregon State. 
  • Graduate student guard Naudia Evans has been the stand out for the Lions this season as she's averaging a team best 14.4 PPG to go along with 6.8 assists to set up her teammates with quality looks at the basket. 
  • San Diego will look to control the glass against LMU on Thursday as they have been out-rebounded by an average of three boards a game throughout the 2024-25 season. 

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS 

  • Santa Clara begins this week at 8-8 overall this season to go along with a 2-4 mark in the WCC. The Broncos have defeated both Pepperdine and Washington State, but came up short against Saint Mary's, Portland, San Francisco and Gonzaga. 
  • Leading the way for her team this season has been the play of senior forward Olivia Pollerd who's averaged 15.5 PPG his season to go along with 5.7 rebounds this season. 
  • San Diego will look to try and generate offense while dealing with a stout Santa Clara defense as the Broncos have held their opponents to 26.2% shooting from three point range this season.
