SAN DIEGO — Twenty-three kills from
Nemo Beach, a dominant double-double from
Kylie Munday, and a 21-dig effort from
Olivia Bennett helped San Diego volleyball earn a hard-fought win over Oregon State on Saturday afternoon, downing the Beavers by a 3-1 margin before a season-high crowd of 768 in the Jenny Craig Pavilion to take sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Toreros (13-4, 6-0 WCC) bounced back to beat OSU (11-5, 5-1 WCC) by scores of 25-17, 26-24, and 25-19 to secure their sixth straight victory.
Isabel Clark complimented Beach's big day by totaling 14 kills of her own.
BayLea Sparks and
Kali Engeman (five blocks apiece) headlined a staunch showing from the San Diego defense that saw five Toreros tally three blocks or more as USD out-stuffed OSU 11.0 to 9.0 while holding the Beavers to a meager .203 hitting percentage as a team.
Despite beginning the game with a 3-0 run, San Diego led just once in a one-sided opening frame in which Oregon State eventually pulled ahead by as many as eight. But nine kills from Beach helped the Toreros respond emphatically in set two, never trailing as they flipped the script on the Beavers to prevail by the same 25-17 score they fell by in set one.
With the match tied 1-1, USD and OSU traded blows throughout a back-and-forth third period that featured 10 ties and three lead changes. With the Toreros knotted 22-22 with the Beavers down the stretch after a clutch kill from Beach, freshman
Lauren Lynch delivered a service ace to push her team ahead, 23-22. One more kill from both Beach and Clark followed, then Oregon State committed an attack error on set point to give San Diego a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Saturday's fourth and final frame was close early on before USD embarked on a thrilling 15-5 run to take a commanding 18-9 lead. San Diego's match-sealing mid-set surge featured three kills from Clark, two kills from both Beach and Engeman, and one apiece from Sparks and Durgan, and it gave the Toreros more than enough breathing room to hang on and earn their ninth win in their last 11 matches.
