No. 10 Toreros Record Fourth Straight Shutout in Win Over Pacific

An Iain Wagner second half goal proved to be the winner on Halloween

SAN DIEGO — Returning to their home field on Halloween night, the No. 10 San Diego men's soccer team (11-3-2, 5-1-1 WCC) picked up a 1-0 victory over Pacific (3-12-0, 1-6-0 WCC) on Friday evening from Torero Stadium.

Iain Wagner found the back of the net for the sixth time this season as he scored early in the second half following a great feed from Owen Walz. Putting together another stellar effort in goal, Lucca Adams posted his seventh clean sheet of the season as the Toreros have now posted four straight shutouts as we enter the final stretch of West Coast Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Getting the action started on a cool San Diego evening, the Toreros recorded their first shot of the night as Steven Ramirez fired a shot that was blocked by the Tiger defender.
  • At the 17 minute mark, consecutive shots from Noah James and Ramirez gave USD a pair of strong scoring chances but they couldn't break through with a go-ahead goal.
  • Just a few minutes later, Luca Fava got involved in the offensive attack as he fired a left-footed rocket that was wide right of the cage.
  • Pacific attempted to generate some offense in the midway through first half, but were called offsides to halt the momentum and keep the match scoreless.
  • With just a minute remaining left in the first half, the Tigers were given a yellow card to set up a USD free kick but the Toreros couldn't make anything happen as the match remained deadlocked through the first 45 minutes.
  • San Diego started off the second half quick, getting multiple chances on goal including multiple shots from Ramirez.
  • Five minutes into the second half of play, Iain Wagner took matters into his own hands. Following a great feed from Walz on the wing, Wagner dribbled through defenders before ripping a low shot from outside the box that found the net, giving his team a 1-0 advantage in the 51st minute.
  • Two minutes later, the Tigers created their best scoring chance of the match as a shot was fired to Adams' right and he went full extension for the save to maintain USD's lead.
  • The rest of the match was played to a stalemate as neither side could find the back of the as San Diego remained unbeaten at home and picked up their fifth win in WCC play by a 1-0 final score.
