SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The University of San Diego women's soccer team closed out its 2025 regular season on Wednesday evening, falling 3-1 to Santa Clara at Stevens Stadium – Buck Shaw Field.
"We made it hard on ourselves early and against a team like that, you get punished." head coach
Greg LaPorte said. "We had momentum in moments, created chances, even a penalty, but couldn't turn them into goals. There's still a lot to take from how we responded and kept pushing."
Santa Clara struck early with two goals in the opening six minutes. Kennedy Schoennauer opened the scoring in the third minute, finishing a through ball from Addie Whitehouse with an assist also credited to goalkeeper Ally Harrison. Just three minutes later, Whitehouse doubled the lead with a strike from distance to make it 2-0.
San Diego's best early opportunities were provided by senior forward
Josefine Schlichting but kept out by a goal-line clearance and separately, a drawn penalty kick at 9:17 which Harrison denied Schlichting of, from the spot.
The Broncos added a third goal in the 36th minute to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime. Still, San Diego outshot the Broncos in the first half and continued to find its footing in the second half.
The Toreros cut into the deficit in the 59th minute when freshman forward
Amanda Anders netted her sixth goal of the season. After the first-year star was tripped up in the box, the rebound of a set piece fell to her feet at the top of the box which she laced into the top right corner.
Despite playing the final 25 minutes a player down following a double yellow, red card to senior defender
Emma Gonzalez, the Toreros held Santa Clara scoreless after the break, but the offensive momentum was halted.
