Greg LaPorte enters his second season at the helm of San Diego's women's soccer program in 2025. LaPorte was named the program's fifth head coach on Dec. 21, 2023.
In his first season as USD Women's Soccer Head Coach, LaPorte inherited a team which had won just one match the year prior. He tripled that win total in 2024 including the program's first conference win since 2021 and a draw in the season finale against national No. 11 Santa Clara. LaPorte's first career win as an NCAA DI head coach came on Sept. 15, 2024, with a 1-0 clean sheet on the road at UC Riverside.
Within his first roster overhaul, 42.8% of the team's goals, 41.7% of assists, 100% of goalkeeper minutes and the vast majority of defensive back line minutes came from underclassmen in 2024. Defender Ella Callanan embodied the youthful development under LaPorte and his staff, earning WCC All-Freshman.
LaPorte joined the Toreros from nearby UC San Diego, where he had worked as an assistant coach since 2018. He returned to Alcala Park after spending five seasons (2011-15) as a Torero assistant under Ada Greenwood.
A San Diego native, LaPorte helped guide UC San Diego through its transition to NCAA Division I. After winning the 2018 CCAA regular season, CCAA Tournament and NCAA West Regional title, LaPorte and the Tritons repeated as conference champions in their final season in Division II.
Once UC San Diego officially transitioned to Division I and joined the Big West Conference, LaPorte assisted the Tritons as they improved their conference record in each season from 2021 to 2023.
During his first stint as a Torero, LaPorte helped lead San Diego to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program's most recent appearance in 2014 and the Toreros' deepest run, which saw the team reach the Sweet 16 in 2011.
His coaching career began in 2007 at his alma mater, nearby Poway High School. He made his first foray into collegiate coaching at UC San Diego, instructing the Tritons' goalkeepers from 2007 to 2010.
As a player, LaPorte competed professionally from 1999 to 2002, beginning with training with Manchester City and Doncaster Rovers. LaPorte is a 2011 graduate from the U of A.
From there, LaPorte competed for Amparo Atletico in Brazil, as well as stints in the Oberliga and Regionaliga in Germany and in Italy. Most notably, LaPorte played with Bundesliga side Hoffenheim under Hansi Flick, a World Cup and Champions League-winning manager, currently at FC Barcelona.
