NORTHRIDGE – Competing in their third game in six days, the San Diego women's basketball team (1-2, 0-0 WCC) came up short in a good battle on the road against the CSUN Matadors (2-0, 0-0 Big West) by a 63-48 final on Saturday afternoon.
Kylie Ray had another strong performance playing near her hometown, as she scored 20 points and collected a new career-high nine rebounds against the Matadors. Hallie Rhodes was productive as well for the Toreros as she scored 14 points and blocked a pair of shots on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ray set the tone early for her big day as she scored the game's first points on a baseline jumper.
- Midway through the quarter, Helen Holley got involved on the offensive end by putting home a nice layup in the paint that put USD ahead 9-7.
- After the Matadors went on a run late in the quarter, Eva Ruse helped even the score with a nice driving layup to make it 17-all, before CSUN would score three more points to lead 20-17 through the first 10 minutes.
- Early in the second quarter, H. Rhodes helped get the deficit back to one possession as she made a layup after a great feed from Ray as the Toreros trailed 22-19.
- The Matadors would assert themselves midway through the quarter before USD would respond with a nice run of their own as Ray would score six straight points for her squad to make it 33-25 with under three minutes until halftime.
- San Diego would go on a strong late half push as Ayla Williams made two big free throws to get the lead down to 35-31 before the half.
- Getting the second half going, Dresha Moore made a key play for the Toreros by grabbing an offensive rebound and putting the shot back to get her team back within four points.
- CSUN would build a double digit lead late in the quarter, as H. Rhodes scored a pair of key buckets to get the Toreros a little closer as the score was 51-39 Matadors with just 10 minutes remaining.
- USD would score their first points of the fourth quarter on a nice designed play on a baseline out of bounds situation as Ray connected on a three to make it a 57-42 score.
- CSUN would go on to control the rest of the game as they earned a 63-48 victory on their home court.
TORERO TIDBITS
