Wounded Toreros Bested By No. 15 USC

LOS ANGELES — San Diego Women's Tennis concluded a match at 15th-ranked Southern California on Friday evening with a tough 0-7 decision to the Trojans, unable to back up last season's 4-3 win over USC.

Battling injuries, USD was forced to withdraw and forfeit No. 6 singles. Both of the Toreros top two players were withheld from the singles lineup and junior transfer Brionna Nguyen made her Torero debut in both singles and doubles.

After USC took the doubles point, the Trojans took the early lead in singles, by winning each of their first sets. Freshman Anni Puls fought her way back on court three vs. No. , beating her opponent 6-4 in the second set to force a third set.

It was a different story for Nordikyan (at No. 1 singles for the first time in her career), Read, Gregg, and Nguyen, who each fell in their respective matches two sets to none in different spots in the adjusted lineup in their young careers.

After taking the second set, Puls ultimately fell 7-5 in the third set of her match, giving USC a 0-6 lead. Read was the last to fall, playing at No. 2 singles for the first time in her career, fighting in a second set tiebreak on quadruple match point, but ultimately falling.

The Toreros now move to 4-5 on the season, while No. 15 Auburn is now 4-1.
