WACO, Texas – San Diego Men's Tennis' best start in program history came to an end at eight wins Saturday as the Toreros fell in their first ever ITA Team Indoor National Championships quarterfinal, 4-2 to top-ranked TCU.
After taking down No. 7 Duke, the No. 4 seed in the ITA Men's Indoor Team Championships on Friday, No. 9 San Diego was looking to keep their momentum rolling against the top seed on their side of the bracket and defending National Champions. However, the Toreros were unable to pull off an upset against the nation's top ranked team, losing 4-2 to the Horned Frogs.
The top two doubles pairings in the country went head-to-head, No. 1 Stian Klaassen and Oliver Tarvet of San Diego vs. No. 2 Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted of TCU. Ultimately, Vives and Maxted won 6-3 to secure the doubles point for the Horned Frogs, Klaassen and Tarvet's first loss in nine matches together this dual season.
In the other doubles match that was completed, Savriyan Danilov and Iiro Vasa also lost in 6-3 fashion to TCU's Jack Pinnington and Cooper Woestendick.
In singles, USD tried to regain some momentum by winning four of the six singles matches before TCU could win three singles matches.
Klaassen and Tarvet were the first to finish as both won in straight sets, seeing USD take a 2-1 lead over the tournament favorites. Klaassen, ranked No. 94, defeated No. 92 Duncan Chan, 6-4, 6-2. Tarvet, ranked No. 2 nationally, remained undefeated in singles play this season, taking down No. 18 Jack Pinnington also in 6-4, 6-2 fashion.
Ultimately, USD's run would end as Vives outlasted Danilov, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) in a tiebreak situation. The Russian Torero tried to extend his match to a third set and battled in the tiebreak, but the experienced Vives knotted the overall score at two a piece.
Vasa, however, was able to force a decisive third set against No. 9 Lui Maxted. However, Vasa's momentum could not quite roll over to the third set, losing 6-1.
As a result, the Toreros were down to their final punch. Junior Neo Niedner won the first set, but went to a third set against TCU's Al Pedrico Kravtsov. In the other match, freshman Adrien Berrut forced a third set against Woestendick.
As Berrut took a 4-3 lead in the third set, Niedner lost the third set, 6-2, giving the Horned Frogs the victory and advancement to the ITA Team Indoor National Championships Semifinal.
