SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (0-4, 0-0 WCC) jumped out to an early lead on Monday afternoon but could not hang on as it fell by a close 7-6 margin in the series finale against No. 23 TCU (4-0, 0-0 Big 12) at Fowler Park.
After the Horned Frogs struck first for a run in the opening frame, homers from Jonathan Fitz and Jack Gurevitch in the first and second innings gave the Toreros a 4-1 advantage. TCU countered with a four-run fourth, and was able to fend off two late USD comebacks to secure a sweep of San Diego.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After USD went down 1-0 in the first inning, Fitz responded quickly for the Toreros in the bottom of the frame, sending his first career home run off the batter's eye in center field to tie the game at one run apiece.
- Gabe D'Arcy led off the second inning with a single, and reached third when Aden Howard added a single of his own. D'Arcy then stole home as part of a double steal after Horned Frogs catcher Nolan Traeger attempted to throw out Howard swiping second, giving San Diego a 2-1 lead.
- Gurevitch batted next and extended his team's advantage by hammering his third home run of the series, this time sending an opposite-field two-run shot to left field that made it 4-1.
- An RBI single, RBI double, and a two run homer from TCU in the top of the fourth inning allowed the visitors to reclaim the lead at 5-4.
- USD responded once again in the fourth when Gurevitch knocked an RBI single up the middle to plate AJ Beltre and knot the score up at 5-5.
- The Horned Frogs retook the lead in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to make it 6-5, but Jayden Lobliner notched an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring home Austin Smith and tie the game up for a third time, now at 6-6.
- TCU answered with another solo homer in the top of the ninth inning, giving it a 7-6 lead that it did not relinquish.
ON THE MOUND
- Andrew Mosiello got the start on the mound against his former team and pitched four innings, giving up five runs and striking out five while walking two. He surrendered just one run across the first three innings of his outing before being tagged for four runs in the top of the fourth.
- Fernando Palencia, Dallin Harrison, and Jack McWilliams turned in one inning each out of the bullpen, combining to give up only one run and two hits. Each of the three struck out one batter.
- Hayden Cody finished the game for USD and surrendered one run on just one hit alongside two strikeouts. He stranded runners on first and second in the top of the eighth to preserve a 6-6 tie before TCU pulled ahead in the ninth.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Eight of the nine players in San Diego's batting order got at least one hit, with three of those hitting at least two. All nine starting batters got on base at least once.
- Gurevitch was responsible for three of USD's five total RBIs. He has now hit three home runs in four games to open the 2025 season.
- Beltre recorded the first hit and run scored of his young college career on Monday afternoon.
