San Diego Drops Series Opener at Arizona

Wildcats defeat Toreros 11-0 at Hi Corbett Field on Friday evening

TUCSON, Ariz. — San Diego baseball (0-5, 0-0 WCC) dropped a tough 11-0 run-rule loss to Arizona (2-3, 0-0 Big 12) in its series opener on Friday night against the Wildcats at Hi Corbett Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arizona got the scoring started by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning to make it 1-0. 
  • Two RBI singles, a solo home run, and an RBI sacrifice fly earned Arizona four runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it 5-0. 
  • The Wildcats rallied in the sixth inning for six more runs to move the score to 11-0 in their favor. 
  • Arizona led by that same margin after seven innings, which ended the game on a run rule. 
ON THE MOUND
  • Cal Scolari got the start on the mound for USD and turned in three innings, surrendering six hits and two runs while striking out a pair. 
  • Tristan LaMaison threw the next two innings out of the bullpen, striking out one while giving up three runs. 
  • A duo of freshmen relievers in AJ Frausto and Jack McWilliams pitched the remainder of the game for USD.   
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Aden Howard went 2-for-3 from the plate, including a double.
  • Nico Libed got an at-bat pinch hitting for Gabe D'Arcy in the seventh inning, and got his first hit of the season with a double down the left field line.

The Toreros will continue their series with Arizona tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Hi Corbett Field is set for 1:00 p.m. PST.
