ST. GEORGE, Utah – Returning to the diamond for another big tournament, the San Diego softball team (5-8, 0-0 WCC) split their morning and afternoon doubleheader at Karl Brooks Field on Friday.
The Toreros began the day by dropping their opener against Boise State (9-3, 0-0 MWC) by a 9-1 score, before bouncing back with an 8-4 victory over Weber State (3-9, 0-0 Big Sky) to wrap up Friday's action.
Michelle Delgado starred for USD in both games as she reached base in all five of her plate appearances against the Broncos and Wildcats.
Getting the bats rolling in game two, Taylor Johnson smoked a two-run home run for her first round tripper of the season which proved to be huge tack on runs for USD in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED— Boise State 9, San Diego 1
- USD got off to a strong start on Friday morning as Carly Ruiz singled up the middle to lead off the game and then came around to score on an RBI single from Michelle Delgado giving the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
- Boise State responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
- With one out in the top of the second, Arisa Tovar delivered a one out double to the left center gap while Hailey Mulligan worked a walk to put traffic on the bases. The Toreros would leave both runners on base to keep the deficit at one run.
- The Broncos would add another run in the bottom of the second to grow their lead to 3-1.
- USD would load the bases in the top of the third as they kept applying pressure to Boise State's starting pitcher but weren't able to score as they trailed by two.
- Growing their lead in consecutive innings, BSU would put up a trio of runs in both the third and fourth innings as they picked up the 9-1 win in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED— San Diego 8, Weber State 4
- After McKenna Braegelmann retired the Wildcat hitters in order in the top of the first, USD got to work offensively as Ruiz once again led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Johnson would then get to work on her big game at the plate with an RBI fielder's choice to plate USD's first run.
- Weber State would tie up the game in the top of the second with an RBI fielder's choice.
- In the bottom of the third San Diego would take the lead and not look back as Alyssa Hernandez and Kaitlyn Wynia both singled and would come around to score on RBI knocks from Delgado and EJ Joyner as the Toreros now enjoyed a 3-1 lead.
- Braegelmann would follow her offense by putting up a shut down inning allowing just one base runner to keep the team's two run lead.
- The Wildcats would tack on another run in the top of the fifth as Kaitlyn Bartlow entered the circle and escaped the jam with her team still leading 3-2.
- USD's bats would then heat up again as Wynia, Johnson and Delgado began the inning with three consecutive singles that put the Toreros ahead 4-2. Joyner would then double down the left field line to score Johnson and Mikalyn Emanuelli would plate a run on a fielder's choice to put San Diego in control leading 6-2 heading into the late innings.
- Weber State wouldn't go down quietly as they plated two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-4 game.
- After Tele Jennings drove a one out double to the wall in left center, Johnson smoked a line drive over the fence for her first home run of 2025 that gave USD an 8-4 lead three outs away from a win.
- With Kelsey Tadlock in the circle, she induced a fly out to right field with two runners on base as the Toreros picked up the split in St. George on Friday.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Delgado had another strong game at the plate going a combined 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles, four RBI, two runs scored and a walk to raise her season batting average to .433 on the season.
- Johnson belted her first home run of the new season as she was a combined 2-for-6 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
- Braegelmann turned in another strong start for her team by tossing 4 2/3 innings and allowing just a pair of runs and striking out four hitters.
- Picking up her second save of the season, Tadlock threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out two hitters against Weber State.

The Toreros are back in action tomorrow for the second day of the Utah Tech Tournament. Beginning the action USD will take on Idaho State (6-3, 0-0 Big Sky) at 8:30 a.m. and will then face Utah State (9-3, 0-0 MWC) for the third time this season at 11:00 a.m. Both games will take place at Karl Brooks Field.
