ST. GEORGE, Utah – After splitting the first two games of the 2025 Lyman Classic at Utah Tech University on Friday, San Diego Softball (5-9, 0-0 WCC) was right back at it in the first of two games Saturday against Idaho State (7-3, 0-0 Big Sky).
However, the Toreros allowed six runs in the bottom of the second, en route to a 10-2 loss, which ended after six innings.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bartlow got the start for head coach MJ Knighten Saturday morning and had a solid first inning.
However, the second inning did not go as planned, as a walk started a four-run rally for the Bengals (7-3). That resulted in Knighten coming out and making a pitching change, bringing in graduate student McKenna Braegelmann, who allowed two more runs to score before getting out of the inning.
The USD offense responded in the top of the third inning as junior shortstop Hailey Mulligan hit an RBI double to left field, scoring senior catcher Arisa Tovar. Moments later, redshirt sophomore left fielder and lead off hitter Carly Ruiz recorded an RBI ground out, scoring Mulligan to cut the Toreros' deficit to four.
Ultimately, that would be all the offense USD (5-10) could muster against Idaho State as the Bengals scored four runs across the final four innings, including two in the bottom of the sixth to record the 8-run mercy rule victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Bartlow, who fell to 2-4, allowed four hits and five runs (all earned) with two walks.
- Braegelmann pitched the final three and two-thirds, while allowing right hits and five runs (all earned) with one walk and four strikeouts.
- Of USD's six hits offensively, graduate student second baseman Alyssa Hernandez had two of them in a 2-for-3 day. Hernandez has raised her batting average to a team-high .404 on the season as she has recorded a hit in all but three games, including in 10 of her last 11.
