ST GEORGE, Utah – For the third time in eight days, San Diego softball squared off against Utah State Saturday afternoon in the 2025 Lyman Classic Tournament at Utah Tech University, hoping to have a different outcome. Against the Aggies last week in Riverside at the California Baptist Tournament, USD lost both matchups.
As a result, the Toreros were hoping for something different Saturday.
Despite facing a nine-run deficit early, USD fought back, cutting Utah State's lead down to one entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Although the Toreros brought the tying-run to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning, San Diego could not quite come through, losing 13-10 to the Aggies.
A one-out walk by sophomore Dalia Powell, who pinch hit for redshirt sophomore Carly Ruiz and a two-out single by sophomore third baseman Michelle Delgado brought runners at the corners with junior Emma Giaime up to plate.
Giamie, who gave up nine runs in the circle in the opening frame, had an opportunity to re-write all of that. However, she grounded out to end the game.
Things looked bleak early as the Toreros got doubled up on a sacrifice fly attempt in the first inning. Then in the bottom half of the inning, Utah State scored nine times, which included an error by Giaime, who got the start.
However, San Diego never gave up. Senior center fielder Mikalyn Emanuelli recorded an RBI groundout, scoring Giaime to get the Toreros on the scoreboard in the top of the second.
Then in the third inning, Delgado hit a two-run home run to center field to cut the deficit down to seven, 10-3, also scoring junior first baseman Taylor Johnson, who singled on the previous at-bat.
USD (5-10) sent 10 women to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring five times, which was highlighted by four different RBI singles by Emanuelli, graduate student second baseman Alyssa Hernandez, sophomore right fielder Kaitlyn Wynia and Johnson. That cut the deficit down to two, 10-8.
Utah State (10-3) added on a run with a solo home run.
However, that still did not derail the Toreros.
After no runs were by both sides in the fifth inning, San Diego responded on back-to-back RBI singles by juniors Shawnese Hogue-Lacy and Hailey Mulligan to get the deficit all the way back to one. The Toreros even had the bases loaded and two outs before the inning came to an end.
However, the Aggies responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth to regain their three-run lead.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Delgado and Hogue-Lacy each had three hits to lead the Torerors offensively. In addition Ruiz, Johnson and Mulligan added two hits.
- Delgado's third-inning home run was her team-leading second blast of the season. Her 3-for-5 performance with three RBIs increased her batting average to .452, in addition to a team-leading 11 RBIs.
- Giamie took the loss, allowing eight hits and nie runs (eight earned) in the first inning alone.
- Junior Kelsey Tadlock came in the circle beginning in the second inning. She went five innings, while allowing four runs (all earned), including two solo home runs, and one strikeout.
