TUCSON, Ariz. — A 4-for-4 performance from
Jack Gurevitch and yet another clutch late-game hit from
Nico Libed helped San Diego baseball rally to tie the score twice against Arizona on Sunday afternoon, but the Wildcats (4-3, 0-0 Big 12) responded with a flurry of eighth-inning runs to prevail by a 12-6 margin and deny the Toreros (0-7, 0-0 WCC) a come-from-behind win.
Gurevitch singled four times, drove in a run, scored a run, and was hit by a pitch, while Libed delivered a pair of game-tying RBIs for a second consecutive day.
The Wildcats went up 4-0 on a first-inning RBI single and a second-inning three-run homer before USD starter
Andrew Mosiello settled in and quieted the Arizona bats for the remainder of his outing. He ultimately threw six innings, scattering six hits, walking three, and striking out five as he held the home team scoreless from the third to the sixth. He stranded runners on second and third to conclude his final frame, wrapping up his outing with a big strikeout on a full count.
Mosiello's workmanlike efforts on the mound gave the San Diego bats a chance to get back in the ballgame, and they began to do so in the sixth when
Austin Smith doubled home
Aden Howard,
Jayden Lobliner drove in Gurevitch with an RBI single, and true freshman
Rex Watson legged out an infield single that allowed Smith to score and cut USD's deficit to 4-3. An inning later, Gurevitch's final hit of the game sent Libed home from second, and the score was tied, 4-4.
The Wildcats had an immediate response for USD's stirring comeback, however, scoring twice in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead following an RBI double-play grounder and an RBI double.
After Lobliner led off the top of the eighth with a single,
Gabe D'Arcy began the Toreros' final rally by working a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second. Libed then sent the second pitch he saw deep into the right-field corner to bring them both home, knotting the score at 6-6 with a two-RBI triple.
But Arizona had the last word in the bottom of the eighth, breaking the tie and securing a 12-6 victory by scoring six times on two RBI singles, a two RBI triple, and a two-RBI double.
