Toreros Lose Midweek Matchup to SDSU

San Diego State deals San Diego baseball 10-4 defeat at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Tuesday night

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (0-8, 0-0 WCC) on Tuesday night dropped a tough 10-4 decision to crosstown rival San Diego State (4-5, 0-0 Mountain West) at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Eight of SDSU's ten runs came in the first two innings of play, with four of those ten total runs being unearned.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego State took an early 8-0 lead on a three-run homer, an RBI single, and multiple errors from the Toreros.
  • USD got one run back in the bottom of the third when Austin Smith knocked an RBI single to center field to score Rex Watson, who drew a walk and reached second base on a wild pitch.
  • The Aztecs registered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 9-1.
  • After entering the game in the bottom of the fourth inning at third base, AJ Beltre immediately made an impact for the Toreros by sending a single to left field that the Aztecs' left fielder had trouble with, allowing Austin Smith to dash home and add another run for USD.
  • Nico Libed continued his hot streak at the plate in the very next at-bat by hitting an RBI double to right-center to plate Beltre and cut the SDSU lead to six runs at 9-3.
  • SDSU scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single to left, making it 10-3.
  • Gabe D'Arcy grounded into a double play in the top of the ninth to make it 10-4, but the Toreros got no closer.
ON THE MOUND
  • Dallin Harrison got the start on the mound for USD, and was one of four pitchers who appeared for the Toreros through the first three innings.
  • Fernando Palencia entered out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the fourth inning and was a bright spot for San Diego, striking out two through a pair of scoreless innings.
  • Hayden Cody threw 1.2 innings through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, giving up two hits and one earned run. His outing, in which he notched two strikeouts, included a 1-2-3 seventh.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Jamie Robertson made his USD debut in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Porter Rovin recorded the first strikeout of his collegiate career in the bottom of the eighth inning.
