SAN DIEGO – USD Women's Tennis was bested by the 25
th-ranked Baylor Bears Sunday afternoon by a narrow scoreline of 4-3.
The Toreros trailed from wire-to-wire but battled and made the guests earn the victory.
The difference could be found in the double point, which the Bears won first with a 6-1 win on court three, then fending off San Diego on court two, 6-4. No. 24 senior pairing of
Claudia de las Heras and
Kailey Evans were tied with their 14
th-ranked counterpart in a match that would go unfinished.
In singles, the Bears doubled their lead, winning in straight sets on court four. The Toreros got one back as de las Heras overcame a 2-6 first set loss with 6-2, 6-1 wins in the next two sets.
Baylor pushed the lead back out to two with a two-setter on court three. With their backs against the wall, Evans answered for USD again, earning a spirited 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over her former teammate at Texas Tech, Cristina Tiglea.
On court five, freshman
Anni Puls fell in a hole early in the third set and just couldn't recover, seeing the guests clinch the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 result. On the final remaining court, freshman
Gabby Gregg was victorious, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to settle the dual match's final score at 3-4.

The Toreros remain at home next weekend, taking on Hawaii on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Arizona State at noon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
