USD Softball Records Second Straight Doubleheader Split in Oregon

San Diego Softball Run-Rules Portland State Before Being Shut Out by #14 Oregon

EUGENE, ORE. – Coming off a loss in the nightcap of USD's softball doubleheader on Friday, the Toreros were looking to come out with some energy on the second day of the Oregon Classic, hosted by the University of Oregon.

In the first game, San Diego pounded out 15 hits and had 13 women touch home, including three in the sixth inning to run-rule Portland State 13-3. Left fielder and lead off hitter Carly Ruiz, second baseman and three-hole hitter Alyssa Hernandez, third baseman Michelle Delgado and designated player EJ Joyner all went 2-for-3 in the victory.

In addition, Kaitlyn Bartlow limited the Vikings (4-14) to three runs and six hits in five innings of work to earn her fourth victory of the season for the Toreros (8-12).

However, in the second game it was a different story in a rematch from Friday's afternoon game against No. 14 Oregon.

San Diego was held to three hits, including getting one-hit through the first four innings, en route to losing 6-0 to the Ducks (18-1). The Toreros (8-13) had an opportunity to score in the fifth inning with a two-out rally, but were unable to convert.

  • The offensive spark continued for the Toreros in the third when catcher Shawnese Hogue-Lacy scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Hailey Mulligan
  • Then, center fielder Mikayln Emmanuelli recorded an RBI single to left, scoring right fielder Kaitlyn Wynia. The third inning ended after Ruiz scored on an error, hit by Johnson to take an 8-2 lead.
  • Bartlow's stretch of zeros continued in the third inning, utilizing a 4-6-3 double play to get out of a jam.
  • In the fourth, USD sent seven women up to the plate, highlighted by Tele Jennings' two-out, two RBI single to right field to take a 10-2 lead, plating Mulligan and Hogue-Lacy. Jennings had pinch hit for Ruiz and went into left field in the ensuing inning.

  • Bartlow's strong outing was capped off by a 1, 2, 3 inning, getting a ground out and two fly outs to finish her day's work.
  • However, the work was not done for the San Diego offense as Dalia Powell, pinch hitting for Emanuelli, tripled to the right center field gap, scoring Jennings to take an 11-3 lead.
  • The inning continued with Janae Combs, pinch hitting for Johnson, reached on an error, scoring Powell. The sixth inning was capped off by an RBI ground out from Joecellia Roberts, who had pinch hit for Joyner in the fifth inning.
