Toreros Fall to Dons in Regular Season Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – Wrapping up the regular season on Saturday afternoon, the San Diego women's basketball team (6-23, 2-18 WCC) couldn't get the victory on the road as they fell to the San Francisco Dons (14-15, 11-9 WCC) by a 60-35 final score at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

Dresha Moore had a phenomenal afternoon in the Bay Area as she finished just a rebound shy of a double-double while scoring 10 points against the Dons in San Francisco. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Dons made their first two shots of the game to take an early 5-0 lead, San Diego responded by getting the ball inside and Dresha Moore put home a layup for the Toreros' first points of the game. 
  • Offense was hard to come by for both teams throughout the first quarter as USD would score their second field goal of the period at the 1:53 mark with Moore scoring her second basket in the paint to make it 6-4 USF. 
  • Scoring the final points of the period, Kylie Horstmeyer grabbed a tough rebound and a delivered a great on-time pass to Ava Ranson for a layup as San Diego trailed 8-6 at the end of the first 10 minutes. 
  • Beginning the second quarter, USD was able to even the game at eight apiece as Malia Tharpe put home a pair of free throws. 
  • After the Dons were able to rebuild their six point lead, Horstmeyer got to work as she grabbed a lose ball and made a turn around jumper in the paint to make it a 16-12 game. 
  • Making it a one possession game with under a minute to go, Claire Gallagher banked in a deep three as the shot clock was expiring to make it an 18-15 San Francisco lead heading into the break. 
  • Returning for the second half of action, the hometown Dons scored the first four points of the half before Moore scored once again in the paint to make it a 22-17 score at the 7:36 mark of the third quarter. 
  • USD would get the deficit back to three as Truitt Reilly connected on a layup to make it a 22-19 game.
  • The Toreros would score their final points of the third quarter with 30 seconds remaining in the period as Hallie Rhodes scored an left-handed layup as San Diego trailed 38-24 heading into the fourth quarter. 
  • Beginning the final period of play, USD got their first points of the fourth on a Moore scored on a fast break to get the Torero deficit down to 46-28.
  • Later in the period, Tharpe would score another layup as the Toreros got out in running to make the score 59-32.
  • In the end, the hometown Dons picked up the 60-35 victory at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center on Saturday afternoon. 

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Moore had a fantastic performance in the season finale as she totaled 10 points, nine rebounds and a pair of steals against USF.
  • Coming off the bench, Gallagher knocked down a pair of threes as she scored six points in her 18 minutes of action. 

NEXT UP
The Toreros now will head to Sin City to compete at the 2025 West Coast Conference Tournament beginning on Thursday afternoon from Orleans Arena.
