Lane Homers Twice in 3-2 Win Over Cal State Bakersfield

Reddemann, Palencia, and Harrison shine on the mound as Toreros beat Roadrunners at Fowler Park on Saturday

SAN DIEGO — Sophomore shortstop Isaiah Lane homered twice on Saturday evening, setting forth his strongest performance as a Torero thus far as San Diego baseball (2-8, 0-0 WCC) beat Cal State Bakersfield (2-9, 0-0 Big West) by a 3-2 margin at Fowler Park.

Lane, a Chula Vista, California native who joined USD as a transfer this offseason from Oklahoma, went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs as he led USD to its second consecutive win.

His big night at the plate complemented a strong start on the mound from right-hander Logan Reddemann, who did not allow an earned run through five innings pitched while scattering two hits and striking out seven.

An unearned run in the top of the second was the lone blemish on Reddemann's outing, but it was answered for in the fourth inning when Lane sent his first college homer off the light pole in left field.

With two outs and the score tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Reddemann used his final strikeout of the game to leave runners on first and second. Lane struck again an inning later, hammering another solo effort into the pine trees beyond Fowler Park's left-field fence to give USD a 2-1 lead.

After an RBI bunt from the Roadrunners tied the score 2-2 in the top of the eighth, San Diego mounted an immediate response in the bottom of the frame. Nico Libed led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a Jack Gurevitch ground ball, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Austin Smith followed with a go-ahead single through the right side, giving the Toreros a late 3-2 advantage once Libed had dashed home.

True freshman Fernando Palencia led the charge for USD out of the bullpen, throwing a pair of scoreless frames.

Dallin Harrison (1-1) was tasked with restoring order in the top of the eighth and did so with ease, leaving the bases loaded with an emphatic strikeout before firing a scoreless ninth to capitalize on Smith's clutch RBI and pick up his first win of 2025.

NOTABLE
  • Lane saved a run in the top of the sixth with a diving stop in the 5.5 hole. His web gem on a 6-3 putout stranded a runner at third to preserve what was at the time a 2-1 San Diego lead.
  • Rex Watson was 1-for-4 with a single. He has now hit safely in four of his last five games and six of his first nine college contests.
  • Libed and Cade Martinez drew the Toreros' only two walks.
  • Martinez, Gurevitch, and Jayden Lobliner were all hit by pitches on Saturday. The Toreros have been hit by nine pitches through the first two games of their series against the Roadrunners after Watson and Gurevitch were both hit twice and Lobliner and Smith were hit once on Friday night.
UP NEXT
The Toreros will vie for their first sweep of 2025 in the series finale against Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon. First pitch at Fowler Park is set for 1:05 p.m.
