Toreros Drop Series Finale to Roadrunners at Fowler Park

San Diego baseball defeated 6-3 by Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon

SAN DIEGO — A three-hit performance from Jack Gurevitch headlined San Diego baseball's efforts on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park as it dropped its series finale to Cal State Bakersfield by a score of 6-3.

Gurevitch doubled twice and scored a run to help the Toreros (2-9, 0-0 WCC) mount a late-game comeback, but their efforts fell short after the Roadrunners (3-9, 0-0 Big West) added a pair of runs of their own in the ninth.

CSUB opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning with a solo homer. USD responded and tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI grounder from Cade Martinez before the visitors scored three runs across the third, fourth, and seventh frames to make it 4-1 in their favor.

With Gurevitch on second in the bottom of the eighth, Austin Smith ripped an RBI double through the right side to pull his team back within two. Isaiah Lane advanced Smith to third with a ground ball in the ensuing at-bat, which allowed him to score on a Jayden Lobliner sacrifice fly as USD cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Roadrunners answered by scoring twice in their final at-bats, giving themselves a 6-3 advantage that the Toreros could not overcome.

Freshman lefty Porter Rovin shined for USD on the mound in the loss, throwing 2.2 innings out of the bullpen without allowing an earned run. Nick Suspenzi (0.1 IP) and AJ Frausto (0.2 IP) teamed up to fire a scoreless eighth.

NOTABLE
  • AJ Beltre went 2-for-3 at the plate in what marked the second multi-hit game of his young college career. He also logged an inning pitched, working through the ninth without being charged with a run after moving to the mound from third base.
  • Andrew Mosiello tallied a team-high five strikeouts on Sunday. He surrendered two earned runs on five hits across three innings in his third start of 2025.
  • Rex Watson and Beltre were both hit by pitches, bringing the Toreros' final HBP total for their three-game series against Cal State Bakersfield this weekend to 11. Watson led the way for USD by being hit a team-high three times versus the Roadrunners, including twice on Saturday.
  • Nico Libed was 1-for-4 in the series finale and drew USD's only walk of the afternoon.
  • Aden Howard delivered a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh after getting a day off from the starting lineup for the first time in 2025.
