No. 7 San Diego Rises to the Occasion, Beating No. 10 Harvard 5-2

SAN DIEGO – No. 7 San Diego Men's Tennis secured it's third top-10 win of the season as the comeback kids grinded out five singles wins to top No. 10 Harvard, 5-2 in another four-hour affair at the Hogan Tennis Center Friday.
 
The Toreros improve to 15-3 on the season, winning not only it's third against a top-10 opponent but it's eighth against a top-25 opponent. USD rebounds to a 7-1 record as the hosts, suffering its first home setback on Monday with a 3-4 loss to then No. 7 Columbia.
 
The doubles point was a highly-contested one on all three courts, but Harvard ultimately got the edge. The ranked battle on court one would go unfinished at 6-6 while the Crimson claimed 6-4 and 7-5 wins on courts three and two respectively.
 
In singles play, however, the Toreros flipped the momentum with five first set wins out of six, highlighted by three which were won on 7-6 tiebreakers.
 
USD freshman Adrien Berrut quickly evened the score, winning 6-3, 6-3 on court five. Not long after, redshirt-junior Stian Klaassen collected a straight-set win of his own on court three, 6-3, 6-4 to put the Toreros on top for the first time on the day.  
 
Harvard would get on the board for the first time in singles play, a straight set win for the guests at No. 6 singles to move the score to 2-2.
 
It was then that in a top-30 matchup on court one, USD junior and national No. 7 Oliver Tarvet continued his scorching hot week that saw him take down national No. 1 on Monday, This time, he topped national No. 27 Daniel Milavsky in straight sets, never looking back from a 7-6 (7-3) first set, taking the second 6-1.
 
One match away from clinching victory, the Toreros needed just one of the two third sets remaining on courts two or four. ITA No. 57 Grad Savriyan Danilov rose to the occasion, claiming a ranked victory on court two, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2 to clinch the Torero victory. Junior Neo Niedner claimed the victory on the last court due to a medical retirement in the third set from Harvard's San Diego native Rohan Murali, settling the score at 5-2.

The Toreros are back at it tomorrow, opening conference play at home, taking on No. 71 Santa Clara Saturday morning at the Hogan Tennis Center at 11 a.m..
