LOS ANGELES — Austin Smith hammered a grand slam en route to totaling six RBIs on Saturday afternoon, leading San Diego baseball to an emphatic 11-1 run-rule victory over Loyola Marymount in eight innings at Page Stadium.
The Toreros (4-18, 1-1 WCC) pounded out nine hits to power past the Lions (13-10, 1-1 WCC) and even their first West Coast Conference series of 2025 at one game apiece.
USD scored seven times across the first two innings of play before adding three more runs in the top of the fifth on a bases-clearing triple from freshman
Rex Watson. Smith's final RBI of the game came on a groundout in the top of the eighth, creating the 10-run lead necessary to end the contest an inning early under the WCC's newly instituted mercy rule.
RBI singles from
Cade Martinez and
Nico Libed preceded Smith's second-inning grand slam, giving San Diego starter
Logan Reddemann an early 7-0 cushion as he took the mound for the first time since March 8. He ultimately surrendered just one run on two hits across 4.1 innings while walking none and striking out four.
Graduate transfer
Andrew Mosiello (1-3) earned the win after taking over for Reddemann with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
All told, the duo teamed up to hold LMU to just three hits.
NOTABLE
- Smith's six RBIs are tied for his career high, matching his six-RBI performance February 24, 2024 vs. Arizona at Fowler Park. He bookended the Toreros' offense on Saturday, starting the scoring with a first-inning RBI double before adding his team's last run in the game's final frame.
- Connor Meidroth and Libed each had two hits, and Meidroth came around to score two runs.
- Jack Gurevitch was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a game-high two walks.
- Watson's fifth-inning triple was the first of his young college career. He becomes the seventh San Diego player to record a triple this season. Only Isaiah Lane (two) has more than one.
- The Toreros' eight triples through 22 games in 2024 are just one shy of the nine USD totaled across 56 games in 2024.
- San Diego has hit two grand slams in the last six days (Rex Watson, 3/16/25 and Austin Smith, 3/22/25).
- Mosiello's six strikeouts were a game-high.
- Saturday's 11-1 decision marked USD's first run-rule victory of 2025.
