OGDEN, Utah– Wrapping up the team's weekend in Utah, the San Diego softball team (16-18, 0-0 WCC) came up short on the road against the Weber State Wildcats (10-22, 0-0 Big Sky) by a 6-5 final score on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Stadium.
Alyssa Hernandez had a big afternoon as she drove in a season-high four runs, while Alex Riggs turned in 4 1/3 great innings in the circle while allowing just one earned run against the Wildcats.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Continuing their team trend of starting fast, the first two USD hitters reached base on singles with Kaitlyn Wynia and Carly Ruiz providing early pressure. Weber State was able to escape the early traffic and put up a zero in the bottom of the first.
- Alex Riggs got the start for the Toreros in the circle and did a great job of limiting early damage by allowing just one run in the bottom of the first.
- Looking to respond to the Wildcats' early run, Shawnese Hogue-Lacy smoked a triple past the Weber State shortstop to jump start the offense. Hernandez delivered immediately by sending a sacrifice fly to center that scored Hogue-Lacy and tied the game back up at one.
- Riggs settled in for the Toreros as she set down all she faced in the bottom of the second to get her offense back to work.
- Michelle Delgado was hit by a pitch and Taylor Johnson worked a walk with one out in the frame to set up Hernandez. Alyssa promptly sent a ball to the left center gap that scored both runners and put the Toreros ahead 3-1.
- Both pitchers continued to settle in as both offenses were held off the board in the bottom of the third and fourth innings in Ogden.
- In the top of the fifth, Johnson drove a one out single to center and then got to third base on an extra base hit from Hogue-Lacy. Once again hitting for her team with runners in scoring position, Hernandez got the job done with an RBI groundout to shortstop that plated Johnson and made it a 4-1 Torero lead.
- Weber State got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Kaitlyn Bartlow came in from the bullpen and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep USD ahead by a pair of runs.
- The Wildcats after escaping a bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead with the Toreros having just three outs to work with needing a rally.
- After Johnson and Hogue-Lacy reached base to start the USD seventh, Emma Giaime came off the bench and delivered an RBI fielder's choice to make it a one run game again. Weber State was able to get out of the inning to take the series finale by a 6-5 final score.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Hernandez was excellent all weekend for her team as she went 1-for-3 with four RBI against the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
- Riggs put together one of the strongest starts of her young career by tossing 4 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run and recording a pair of strikeouts.
- Hogue-Lacy was a key piece in the middle of USD's order as she went 3-for-4 hitting her first career triple to go along with a double and a run scored.
- Wynia reached base three times in the lead off spot for her team as she went 2-for-3 with a walk in the series finale.
