Toreros Fall to Santa Clara to Open Reggie Smith Softball Complex

SAN DIEGO– Beginning conference play with a historic day on campus, the San Diego softball team (16-20, 0-2 WCC) competed in their first two games at the brand new Reggie Smith Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Toreros opened their new facility in front of a pair of sell out crowds on a beautiful, sun-soaked afternoon in America's Finest City.

Santa Clara (22-14, 2-0 WCC) picked up a pair of 5-0 wins in the first two games of the series as the Toreros played strong defense and had some strong pitching performances, but they couldn't get the offense going on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: SANTA CLARA 5, SAN DIEGO 0

  • Kicking off the festivities at the new ballpark, Kelsey Tadlock entered the circle and set down the first three Broncos she faced in order for a scoreless first inning.
  • San Diego recorded the first hit of the day at their new home, as Michelle Delgado lined a base hit to center and Taylor Johnson was hit by a pitch with two away in the frame but were left on base to keep the game scoreless.
  • Santa Clara would score the first run of game in the top of the second on an RBI single up the middle to start the scoring.
  • USD worked hard to answer back in the bottom of the second as Joecellia Roberts, Hailey Mulligan and Mikalyn Emanuelli each singled to load up the bases, but the Toreros were kept off the board as the score remained 1-0.
  • The Broncos tacked on three runs in the top of third to add on to their lead as they built a 4-0 advantage heading into the middle innings.
  • Emma Giaime entered the circle for USD and provided tremendous relief as she kept Santa Clara off the board all the way until the seventh inning.
  • Santa Clara added one more run to their total in the top of the seventh on an RBI single as they picked up the 5-0 victory in the first game at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED: SANTA CLARA 5, SAN DIEGO 0

  • Returning to the diamond for the evening half of the doubleheader, McKenna Braegelmann made quick work of the Bronco top of the order.
  • USD's offense got off to a strong start in the bottom of the first as Kaitlyn Wynia led off the inning with a walk while Johnson was hit by a pitch but couldn't bring either of them home to keep the game scoreless.
  • After the Broncos lead off hitter reached on a walk to start the second, Braegelmann delivered what her team needed as she struck out the next three hitters in order to post another zero.
  • Following another scoreless frame from both pitchers, USD got their first hit of the game from Emanuelli as she grounded a ball past the Santa Clara shortstop for a lead off single but couldn't scratch a run across as the game remained scoreless.
  • The Broncos scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth as they hit a solo homer to left to give the visitor's a 1-0 lead in the middle innings.
  • San Diego recorded their first extra base hit in their new home as Alyssa Hernandez drove a double to the right center gap to attempt to kick start the Torero offense.
  • Braegelmann ended her outing with another one, two, three inning  as she finished with seven strikeouts and allowed just one run against the current WCC leaders.
  • Santa Clara added to their lead by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth as they would earn their second 5-0 victory of the day.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Giaime did an excellent job of pitching in relief for the Toreros as she threw 4 2/3 innings of one run ball without allowing a walk and striking out one hitter she faced.
  • Emanuelli was a spark at the bottom of USD's batting order as she went a combined 3-for-5 at the dish to start WCC play.
  • Braegelmann was excellent in her start as she threw five innings, allowed just one run and hit while matching a season-high with seven strikeouts.
  • Getting on base the hard way throughout the doubleheader, Johnson reached base via a couple of hit by pitches and worked a walk while hitting clean up for San Diego.
