Women's Basketball Ready to Face Pepperdine in WCC Tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – With the 2024-25 West Coast Conference women's basketball regular season now in the rear view mirror, the San Diego women's basketball team (6-23, 2-18 WCC) is excited to be competing in this week's WCC Basketball Tournament beginning on Thursday afternoon at Orleans Arena.

The Toreros are set to square off in their round one matchup with the Pepperdine Waves (8-21, 3-17 WCC) for the third time this season.

San Diego's looking to avenge a pair of losses during the regular season, as it's been over six weeks since the teams last competed against each other.

USD women's basketball is excited to begin the postseason as two of the team's student-athletes, Kylie Horstmeyer and Truitt Reilly were chosen as All-WCC Honorable Mentions for their strong season.

LAST TIME OUT

  • USD is looking for a bounce back performance after dropping their final regular season game against San Francisco on the road as they fell by a 60-35 final score.
  • Toreros freshman forward Dresha Moore stood out in the performance as she totaled 10 points and nine rebounds against the Dons at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. PEPPERDINE

  • Thursday's conference tournament opener will be the 93rd all-time game between the long time league foes.
  • Pepperdine emerged victorious in both of the team's regular season matchups as they first won at Firestone Fieldhouse on January 2 by a 63-49 score. In the rematch in San Diego, the Waves picked up the 68-66 win at Jenny Craig Pavilion on January 18.
  • These two teams met last season in the first round from Las Vegas with USD earning a 79-64 victory at Orleans Arena with Horstmeyer scoring 15 points off the bench to help lead the way to the victory.

SCOUTING THE WAVES

  • Pepperdine finished the regular season with a 8-21 overall record and a 3-17 mark in WCC play. Besides beating San Diego in both games, the Waves other conference victory came against LMU at home on January 28, 2025 by a 55-43 final score.
  • Head coach Katie Faulkner is in her first season leading Pepperdine's program after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Washington.
  • San Diego will have their hands full slowing down the Waves' freshman guard Chloe Sotell who leads her team by averaging 10.3 PPG this season.
