No. 7 Toreros Dominate en route to another Ed Collins Classic Title

SAN DIEGO – Seventh-ranked USD Men's Tennis completed its dominant run to the defense of it's Ed Collins Classic title with a 4-0 sweep of No. 45 UC Santa Barbara Sunday at the Hogan Tennis Center.
 
The Toreros also swept UC San Diego 4-0 in the first round Friday and handled No. 66 Old Dominion 4-1 on Saturday, thus winning 12 of 13 points throughout the tournament on home courts. San Diego improves to 11-1 all-time against the talented Gauchos, a ninth straight win over UCSB. San Diego improves to 14-2 overall on the season. 

The Ed Collins Invitational is named after the legendary and nationally-recognized tennis personality, instructor and author, 16-year head coach at the University of San Diego. Collins was in attendance for the match and presented the trophy with the Toreros following Sunday's victory (center).

Sunday's dominant win started in doubles. First, redshirt-junior Stian Klaassen and grad Savriyan Danilov snagged a 6-3 win on court two then junior Nikhil Niranjan and freshman Berrut followed suit on three to claim the doubles point.
 
In singles play, USD won five of six first sets. Junior Neo Niedner quickly doubled the score, nearly snagging a double bagel on court five. He downed the Gauchos' Charlie Underwood, 6-0, 6-1.
 
The remaining two points were won on upsets of ITA-ranked opponents in straight-sets. Freshman Adrien Berrut continued his excellent rookie campaign, clinching a top-75 victory on court four, topping ITA No. 73 Diogo Morais 6-4, 6-2. Then, Danilov, ranked No. 52, took care of No. 43 Gianluca Brunkow, 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match and Ed Collins Classic title.
 
Up Next
On Thursday, March 13 at noon, San Diego will take back to the Hogan Tennis Center for a matchup with Middle Tennessee State, currently ranked No. 46 nationally.
