IRVINE, Calif. — San Diego baseball (6-22, 3-3 WCC) hammered out a season-high 14 hits on Tuesday evening but dropped a tough 16-7 decision to No. 12 UC Irvine (22-5, 11-1 Big West) in a midweek matchup at Anteater Ballpark.
After being down by as many as eight runs following the first two innings of play, the Toreros fought back to cut the lead to just three at 10-7 in the top of the eighth, but six runs in the bottom of the frame gave UC Irvine a 16-7 lead San Diego could not overcome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Anteaters got on the board in the first inning with a three-run homer to left field.
- UCI extended its lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning with a two-RBI single and a two-RBI double.
- An RBI double off the center field wall from Isaiah Lane in the top of the third inning was enough to send Jack Gurevitch home from first base. Lane later scored on an RBI single from Rex Watson to make it 8-2.
- An RBI single up the middle from UCI got one run back for the Anteaters in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the score to 9-2.
- A wild pitch allowed Nico Libed to dash home from third base to score a run for San Diego in the top of the fifth.
- Ryan Ward blasted a pinch-hit two-run home run over the right-field wall in the seventh inning of play to cut the UCI advantage to just four at 9-5.
- The Anteaters reestablished their five-run lead at 10-5 in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI sacrifice fly.
- Continuing his stellar day at the plate, Gurevitch hammered a solo home run to center field in the top of the eighth inning, before an RBI fielder's choice from Rex Watson cut the lead to just three at 10-7.
- UCI responded in their half of the frame with a solo home run, a pair of RBI walks, a two-RBI single, and a sacrifice fly to give it a 16-7 lead that it did not relinquish.
ON THE MOUND
- Dallin Harrison entered in relief in the bottom of the second inning, and turned in three strong innings, surrendering just one run on three hits, while striking out a pair.
- Porter Rovin, Jamie Robertson, and Hayden Cody each threw one inning out of the bullpen for USD, combining to give up just one earned run on four hits, while teaming up to strike out four.
- Jack McWilliams entered in the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases loaded and no outs and gave up one earned run on just one hit, while striking out two walking two.

- The Toreros' lead-off batter reached base in each of the game's first three innings, as well as in six of the nine total innings.
- Gurevitch was 4-for-6, with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.
