MORAGA, Calif. — San Diego baseball (9-24, 4-3 WCC) led from start to finish on Friday afternoon, beating Saint Mary's (15-17, 2-5 WCC) by a 10-1 margin at Louis Guisto Field behind home runs from
Connor Meidroth and
Rex Watson and a brilliant start from
Logan Reddemann.
After
AJ Beltre got the scoring started with an RBI groundout, Meidroth hammered a two-run homer in the top of the second, capping a memorable day for his family that saw his older brother (and former USD baseball standout)
Chase Meidroth make his major league debut.
SMC got on the board and cut the Torero lead to 3-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the third, but
Jack Gurevitch answered an inning later, plating Meidroth and
Nico Libed with an RBI double of his own to make it 6-1 in favor of the visitors.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh, when
Austin Smith celebrated his birthday by driving in Meidroth with an RBI single.
Watson wrapped up the scoring with a three-run shot to right-center in the top of the ninth, giving San Diego a 10-1 advantage that was more than enough to take game one from the Gaels.
Reddemann (2-1) dazzled across seven innings on the mound for the Toreros, allowing only one run on three hits while walking just one batter and striking out two.
Dallin Harrison pitched a scoreless eighth before giving way to
Jamie Robertson, who closed out the game by keeping Saint Mary's off the board in the ninth.
NOTABLE
- Austin Smith's seventh-inning single extended his hit streak to 24 games. The longest hit streak in USD baseball history is 31 games, achieved by Josh Harris in 2000; research on historical Torero hit streaks prior to 2021 is ongoing.
- Meidroth was 2-for-3 with four runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk.
- Isaiah Lane was 1-for-2 with two walks.
- Reddemann needed just 88 pitches to navigate seven innings in what marked his first Friday start of 2025.
- USD has now won three straight games for the first time this season.
