Thirteen-Run First Inning Powers Toreros Past Gaels in Moraga

San Diego's first 13 runners reach base on Saturday afternoon in 23-8 win over Saint Mary's at Louis Guisto Field

MORAGA, CALIF. — A remarkable 13-run first inning propelled San Diego baseball (10-24, 5-3 WCC) to a 23-8 run-rule victory over Saint Mary's (15-18, 2-6 WCC) in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.

USD scored in every inning but the fourth and fifth to earn its fourth straight win.

Each of the Toreros' first 13 batters reached base in the game's opening frame, hammering out 11 hits and drawing five walks as 49 minutes ticked by and 19 total batters came to the plate.

Jack Gurevitch set the tone with a leadoff home run before eight different Toreros drove in a run in the top of the first. Connor Meidroth accounted for two of those RBIs by singling twice.

Eleven USD players teamed up to total 21 hits for San Diego on the afternoon, including four (AJ Beltre, Rex Watson, AJ Anzai, and Meidroth) with three apiece. Beltre led the way with five RBIs and five runs scored, while Anzai drove in four, and Smith and Watson both plated three.

Gurevitch, Isaiah Lane, and Austin Smith all crossed the plate three times, headlining a group of 10 Toreros that came around to score.

Cal Scolari (2-2) started on the mound for USD and picked up the win after throwing four innings. Porter Rovin took over in the fifth and threw two innings, then AJ Frausto closed the game out with a scoreless seventh.
