LOS ANGELES– Competing in the rubber game of this weekend's three game series, the San Diego softball team (18-22, 2-4) picked up their first conference series win on Sunday afternoon as they took down LMU (18-22, 3-2 WCC) by a 6-4 final score at Smith Field.
USD's offense launched a pair of home runs as Joecellia Roberts and Alyssa Hernandez each circled the pillows in the victory, with Hernandez launching a go-ahead two-run shot in the seventh to give San Diego the lead for good.
McKenna Braegelmann continued her brilliant weekend in the City of Angels as she tossed another complete game and allowed just three earned runs to help tame the potent LMU offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Continuing to excel in the lead off spot, Kaitlyn Wynia grounded a base hit back up the middle while Mikalyn Emanuelli worked a walk to give USD some early traffic despite not scoring in the opening frame.
- Braegelmann made her return to the circle after making history yesterday and set the Lions down in order in the bottom of the first.
- San Diego would get the scoring started in the top of the second as Hernandez reached base on a fielder's choice and would come around to score on an RBI single from EJ Joyner to give the Toreros an early lead.
- The Lions would go on to score the next two runs of the games as they plated a run in the second and third innings to take the lead. USD's defense delivered a great play as Hailey Mulligan caught a well-struck line drive and doubled off the Lions' base runner at second to keep the deficit at 2-1 through three.
- With her team trailing by a run with two out in the fourth, Roberts took the first pitch she saw and smoked a line drive over the right field wall for her second home run of the season to knot the game at 2-all.
- LMU would regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth as the back-and-forth game continued with USD looking to answer back.
- The Toreros would go on to grab their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth as Wynia, Emanuelli and Michelle Delgado each singled to load the bases with one out. Taylor Johnson would then deliver a massive two-run double to left center that gave USD a 4-3 lead.
- After the Lions got their lead off runner on in the bottom of the fifth, the San Diego defense continued to shine as catcher Arisa Tovar threw a strike to first base to pick off the LMU base runner and Braegelmann got a swinging strikeout on a well placed fastball to put up a zero.
- The Lions weren't done yet as they plated the game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth to even the game at four heading into the seventh inning.
- Providing the biggest hit of the game when her team needed it most, Hernandez stepped up to the plate with two down in the seventh and smoked a ball over the wall in left field for a two-run shot that scored Delgado and gave the Toreros a 6-4 lead.
- Braegelmann would take care of the rest as she would record her second complete game in as many days to help USD win their first conference series by a 6-4 score on Sunday afternoon.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Braegelmann was phenomenal against the Lions again on Sunday tossing 7 innings while allowing just five hits, three earned runs and recording a pair of strikeouts.
- Emanuelli was on base throughout the weekend as she turned in a 2-for-3 game with a walk and a run scored against LMU in the series finale.
- Roberts smoked her second home run of the season to tie the game in the middle innings as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk scored in the victory on Sunday.
- Hernandez delivered the biggest hit of the game as she went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs scored while playing strong defense at second base, as she recorded the game's final put out.
- Setting the table at the top of the lineup, Wynia went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Los Angeles to help San Diego take the final two games of the season.
