San Diego Drops Game Two at Gonzaga

Toreros fall to Bulldogs by 11-4 margin on Saturday night in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — San Diego baseball (16-25, 10-4 WCC) dropped an 11-4 decision to Gonzaga (19-20, 11-3 WCC) at the Patterson Baseball Complex on Saturday night, setting the stage for a decisive series finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third, and though the Toreros responded in the top of the fourth with a homer from Jayden Lobliner to cut that lead in half, Gonzaga added four more runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its advantage.

USD chipped away at its deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth. AJ Beltre grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, then AJ Anzai drew a bases-loaded walk for a second consecutive evening.

San Diego pulled back within two runs when Aden Howard notched an RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it 6-4 but got no closer. The Zags scored five times across the game's final two frames to take a 11-4 lead and put the contest out of reach for USD.

Cal Scolari started on the mound for the Toreros and allowed six earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four. Jamie Robertson was the most effective of the four relievers that followed Scolari, tossing a perfect sixth as he notched a single strikeout.

NOTABLE
  • Lobliner set forth his best performance from the plate as a Torero thus far, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Connor Meidroth (two) was the only other USD player to notch multiple hits.
  • Anzai drew two of the Toreros' three walks. Rex Watson worked San Diego's other free pass.
