Three Toreros Homer in One-Run Loss at No. 14 UCLA

San Diego leaves tying run at second base to end 7-6 defeat on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — Three Toreros homered on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium before USD scored and brought the tying run to second base in the top of the ninth inning , but No. 14 UCLA (25-5, 10-2 Big 10) turned a game-ending double play to seal a 7-6 victory and deny San Diego baseball (6-24, 3-3 WCC) an upset win.

Isaiah Lane set the tone for the Toreros on an afternoon in which each of their first five runs came via a longball, hammering a towering two-run shot over the left-field wall in the top of the first inning to give San Diego an early 2-0 lead.

Though the Bruins answered with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first, USD responded when Austin Smith sent a solo homer to right-center field. The 3-1 advantage his blast created was short-lived, as UCLA immediately tied the score at 3-3 in its ensuing at-bats.

That 3-3 tie lasted until the bottom of the sixth, when the Bruins pulled ahead by a 7-3 margin with a pair of home runs of their own.

Watson cut into that deficit with a seventh-inning two-run homer, then Jack Gurevitch got San Diego back within a run with an RBI single that made it 7-6, but the Toreros got no closer.

Cal Scolari started on the mound for USD and was solid across four innings, scattering three hits and allowing just two earned runs while striking out a game-high six. Andrew Mosiello (1-4) struck out three and walked only one across two innings out of the bullpen but was saddled with the loss after surrendering four earned runs in the sixth. Dallin Harrison, Fernando Palencia, and Jack Giordano teamed up to hold the Bruins scoreless in the game's final two frames.

NOTABLE
  • Smith extended his hit streak to 21 games with a first-inning single to center field.
  • Gurevitch, Lane, Smith, Watson, and Jayden Lobliner all had two hits.
  • Both outs that Palencia recorded came via a strikeout.
  • Saturday marked San Diego's seventh one-run loss of 2025. USD has been walked off once, has tied the game in the ninth and lost once, and has had the tying run on base in the ninth inning and lost on five occasions in 2025 (including Saturday). Three of the Toreros' losses this season have ended with the game's tying run in scoring position.
  • USD has out-hit its opponent twice in its last three games after doing so with 12 hits on Saturday at No. 14 UCLA and 14 hits on Tuesday at No. 12 UC Irvine.
