Softball Falls Short at Saint Mary's in Season Finale

MORAGA– Competing in the team's final game of the 2025 season, the San Diego softball team (20-29, 4-11 WCC) dropped their series finale with Saint Mary's (26-22, 9-3 WCC) by a 3-2 final score on Sunday afternoon at Cottrell Field.

USD's seniors had strong afternoons in their final collegiate games as Mikalyn Emanuelli tripled, Alyssa Hernandez doubled, Joecellia Roberts singled and Arisa Tovar worked a walk and scored against the Gaels.

Kelsey Tadlock threw her second complete game of the weekend by tossing 6 2/3 great innings and allowing just three runs in her final outing of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • San Diego's offense got off to a fast start on Sunday afternoon as Emanuelli began the game with a lead off triple and came around to score on an RBI single from Carly Ruiz that gave the Toreros an early 1-0 lead.
  • Tadlock got the start in the circle for USD in the season finale and posted a zero in the opening frame by recording a key strikeout with a runner in scoring position.
  • After the first two hitters were retired in the top of the second, Tovar worked a walk and then came around to score on an RBI double from Tele Jennings to double the San Diego lead to 2-0.
  • Tadlock took advantage of the insurance run her team scored for her by retiring the Gaels in order in the second inning as the Toreros still led by a pair of runs.
  • In the top of the third, Roberts entered the game and delivered a pinch hit single but was left on base as USD held on to their lead.
  • Both offenses were held at bay in the fourth inning as Sunday afternoon's pitcher's duel headed into the final three innings of play.
  • The Gaels would score their first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly that made it a 2-1 score heading into the sixth inning.
  • With two away in the top of the sixth, Hernandez made the most of her final collegiate at-bat as she drove a double to the wall in right center but was left on base to keep USD ahead by a run.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Toreros benefited from a great defensive play from Michelle Delgado who made a diving stop and throw to retire the Gael hitter and keep San Diego ahead 2-1 with an inning to play.
  • Saint Mary's would go on to score twice in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the 3-2 victory in the series finale.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Tadlock turned in another stellar outing for her club as she threw a 6 2/3 inning complete game by allowing just three runs and striking out four hitters while tossing 122 pitches in the effort.
  • Emanuelli had a 1-for-3 game on Sunday as she tripled and scored a run for USD in her final game as a Torero.
  • Jennings delivered for her team as she went 1-for-3 with an RBI double as she played left field in the season finale.
